MESSAGE FROM MRS. MAURO
A few Odds and Ends updates for this month-
Progress Reports: Beginning in 2018-19, UCSD will be sharing report cards electronically via School Messenger. This change is being made to increase efficiency in how schools get this information to parents. Report cards are created at the end of each trimester. These report cards will be emailed directly to a student's primary contact as noted in PowerSchool. A student’s secondary contact will also receive the electronic report card if that parent does not live with the student and is designated to receive mailings. These report cards will be sent in pdf format, which is easily printable from a personal printing device. Should you wish to have a report card printed for you, please contact Mrs. Johnson during regular school hours.
Parent Rounding Update: Thanks to those who stopped by my table to chat during conferences! It was great to hear the parent perspective on what we’re doing well and what we can continue to better. Below is a summary of the things that parents shared in the form of what we call a “stoplight report.” It talks about what we are doing, things that are being worked on, or in progress, and things that are outside our locus of control.
Just for Fun: During November and December, we’re doing “Flannel Thursdays” dress up days. Staff members will be wearing flannels on Thursdays during the chilly months, and we invite students to join in!

MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Hello Valerius Families!
Please remember to call the Health office phone at (515) 457-6503 or email the school nurse at villegasj@urbandaleschools.com to report any illnesses or if you have a health related question. This will allow all health related issues to stay confidential.
Jenny Villegas is our school nurse and goes between Valerius Elementary and Karen Acres. She is at Valerius on A,C,E days. Lori Havran is the health associate and attendance coordinator. She is at Valerius every day. When calling the attendance line to report your student absent from school, please let her know when and why your student is gone from school. If you send an email to your student’s teacher, please include Lori’s email also, which is havranl@urbandaleschools.com. This will eliminate any confusion when your student is absent.
Attendance Phone Number (515) 457-6503

GRADE LEVEL SPOTLIGHT: 1ST GRADE
First graders are busy scientists this month! We began 1st grade science learning about how science is everywhere and that everyone is a scientist. We learned that scientists observe, do experiments, and work with other scientists all the time. We remember these principles when we do science each day. This month the 1st grade scientists will continue learning about plants and animals. Currently, we are using our knowledge about the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, etc.) while we try to make a new plant from an old one. We are also learning about variations in plants and why plants look the way the do. We will use our knowledge about plant variation when we build our own terrariums later this month! We are excited for Science Night on November 18th and our field trip to the Science Center on November 20th!
MESSAGE FROM MS. TIFFANY
Greetings Everyone,
With the holidays quickly approaching us, there are a couple of holiday programs I would like to highlight for those in need. The Urbandale Community Network (UCAN), a non profit citizens group, is providing assistance to Urbandale residents. All eligible residents can sign up for UCAN’s Adopt a Family, Holiday Gift Mart or Food Assistance. The sign up dates are Nov. 7th 12-7pm or Nov. 8th 3-8pm at Lions Park Shelter 4103 72nd Street Urbandale, IA. Please bring identification for each member in your household, proof of Urbandale residency (current utility bill, lease or rent receipt etc.) and proof of eligibility (free and reduced lunch waiver, LIHEAP verification or 2 pay stubs).
For those not Urbandale residents, Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which provides toys for children during the holiday season. There are several locations around the community that a person can sign up or donate to the program. Please check out https://www.toysfortots.org for additional information.
