ABC Community Update

Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools, and both Carmenita Middle School and Wittmann Elementary School were on the list. Only 11 California elementary schools and 13 California middle schools were on this year’s list. Congratulations to the teams at Carmenita and Wittmann for earning National Blue Ribbon recognition.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that every Californian can now access free online tutoring available 24/7 through a new initiative offering homework help in every K-12 subject and skill-building resources for adult learners. Real-time homework assistance can now be accessed 24/7 here and on the websites of any of the 1,130 local public libraries around the state – click on the “HelpNow” link to reach a one-on-one tutor. The pilot program led by the State Library offers assistance in Math, Language Arts, and other core K-12 subjects in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. There’s no age limit to who can use the service.

Social media challenges continue to grow in popularity, and they’re not always good for kids. The latest to make a comeback is the so-called “hot chip challenge.” This challenge involves kids trying to eat an extremely hot tortilla chip. Kids who have taken this challenge are exposing themselves to potential medical conditions. Some schools have had to call paramedics to assist those who have tried the challenge, and three students in the bay area had to be hospitalized earlier this year. Families are encouraged to warn students about the dangers of social media challenges like these.

Families gathered at Hawaiian Elementary School last Friday to play Loteria. This game, played throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America, is much like bingo. The evening was about celebration - being back at school and Hispanic Heritage Month. All had a great time at the event. All we can say is, "Loteria!"

The ABCUSD Board of Education took the following actions at its regular meeting held on September 20, 2022:

• Students from Hawaiian Elementary School led the Flag Salute
• Introduced the 2022-2023 Student Board Representatives
• Recognized National Hispanic Heritage Month
• Approved the Superintendent Recruitment Plan
• Passed Resolution 22-25 National Hispanic Heritage Month
• Approved revised Board Policy 4000 - Personnel Resources of the District
• Approved revised Board Policy 4300 - Management Team
• Approved the new job classification, job description, and range for Campus Safety and Security Officer effective September 21, 2022
• Received the results of site visits, reviews, and Uniform Complaint data for 2021-2022 third and fourth quarters
