A message from NEW HANOVER COUNTY SCHOOLS
NHCS has modified the morning screening process based on state and CDC guidance. Screening at school entry now asks each student: “Have you had any COVID 19 exposure or a diagnosis?" Students will no longer have their temperatures checked daily.
NHCS is incorporating CDC recommendations on at least 3 feet of physical distance between elementary and middle school students, and 6 when able. However, 6 feet of distancing must be maintained between adults and between adults and students at all times. Within special populations, if 6 feet is not able to be maintained between staff and students, additional PPE should be utilized.
Capacity for approved events should continue to require 6 feet of distancing among attendees and not exceed 50% capacity (for sporting events and meetings).
Disinfecting playground equipment is no longer required, as not found to be beneficial.
A recommendation was added that staff members who are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic do not need to quarantine if they are identified as close contacts. This decision will be the determination of the school nurse in contact tracing.
New Hanover County Schools is requesting all families traveling for Spring Break follow the CDC Recommendations for before and after travel to help us mitigate transmission in our schools. The recommendation can be found here.

Spotlight on Fourth Grade!
Spotlight on Music!
In music we have been taking a look at the past. 2nd Grade is learning all about a time in music history known as The Baroque Period, while 4th and 5th Grades have been learning about influential African-American musicians who changed the course of music in the USA. 3rd Grade has begun their introduction to xylophones and metallophones, and is learning to lead and improvise. 1rst Grade has been very focused on meter and rhythm, while Kindergarten is exploring different voice types and new chants, in the absence of singing.
The music classroom has been buzzing with excitement since the return of students full-time in Plan A. We hope to continue exploring new musical avenues as we work together. Having fuller classes is giving us a wonderful opportunity for cooperation and group activities.
