Tips for Helping Your Child Feel Prepared for School
If your child is feeling apprehensive or anxious about school, talk about his or her concerns. Show understanding and offer encouragement. A positive, calm attitude can make a big difference. Read books about going to school together. Have a consistent, loving, and predictable good-bye routine.
Be positive. Praise goes a long way! Provide your child with positive feedback.
Read with your child. Go to the library together. Buy books as gifts. Research shows that children whose parents read to them on a regular basis do better in school, and reading together helps to build concentration, focus, and vocabulary.
You can get book recommendations from your child’s teachers, the librarians, or look online for popular books by reading level.
Be sure your child gets enough sleep. School age children need on average 10-12 hours of sleep per day. Set a bedtime and stick to it. A good time for bed for children this age is between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
Have routines at home. Routines provide certainty and security, which helps with separation anxiety. Routines also help children prepare for routines at school, and with praise increases their sense of responsibility, independence, and confidence. Use charts as visuals and for positive reinforcement.
Bed Time Routine. Turn TV and any other electronics off at least half hour before bed time. Have a checklist for your child to do, including brush their teeth, bathe, lay their clothes out for the next day, and read a book together before bed.
Morning Routine. Leave enough time for your child to get ready in the morning so he or she does not feel rushed. Make sure your child eats breakfast at home, or arrives at school in time for the school breakfast.
Homework Routine. Set a place and time when your child will be doing their homework and have materials accessible (pencils, eraser, crayons, etc.). Review their work with them!
Get to know teachers and staff at King and their roles. If a problem arises, you will know who to contact.
Sign up for conferences with your child's teacher. Invitations to sign up for time to meet with your teacher have been sent out, find a time to get updates on how your child is doing! Conferences are on Thursdays, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, and 10/26.
