First week is in the books!
Gunnison Middle School Families,
Wow, what a week! We started off the 2023-2024 school year with our first all school assembly. The energy was contagious! Our first two days were spent getting acquainted to our new schedules and getting to know each other. On Wednesday, the 8th graders headed up Taylor Canyon for our annual Taylor Challenge experience. They spent 3 days participating in rafting, rock climbing, archer, fly fishing, and team building activities. More information on outdoor education opportunities for our 6th and 7th grade students!
With the 8th grade students out of the building, the 6th and 7th grade students were able to get a great start in developing community and culture in our building!
Next week our cross country and football teams get their season underway!
Just a reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Monday for Labor Day.
Take care,
Lance Betts

Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Brekke-Ebbott
Hello GMS Community!
My name is Renee Brekke-Ebbott and I am thrilled to be your new Assistant Principal! I started my career in education twenty years ago and spent the last ten wonderful years teaching 7th grade science. This year, I look forward to getting to know all of our students and working closely with our fabulous staff!
Outside of school, I am a wife, mother, daughter, and friend. I love to travel and spend time outdoors running, camping, skiing, and gardening. My favorite places to visit are the Pacific Northwest (I grew up in Oregon) , the Rocky Mountains, and foreign countries. My husband, Hank, is an instructor at Western. We have three children. Luke is a GHS Senior (whoop whoop!) and June and Jake are Sophomores.
I look forward to getting to know all of our GMS families this year. Thank you for sharing your kids with us!
What are we working on?
Advisory Team Building!
Our 6th and 7th grade students participated in teambuilding activities the second half of the week after finishing their math and english i-Ready diagnostic tests!

Taylor Challenge
The 8th grade students are on their way back from Taylor Challenge as you read this! More to come next week along with photos and stories about their experience!
GMS Mountain Bike Team
We are excited to announce the Gunnison Middle School Mountain Bike Team! This program will operate in cooperation, and with support, from the Gunnison High School Mountain Bike Team. Participants will be given an opportunity to build fitness and skills through trained and experienced youth mountain bike coaches. More importantly we will shape friendships, determination, and confidence on and off the bike. The primary focus of this team will always be FUN! Additionally, we will introduce healthy habits and training strategies which are beneficial to riders interested in transitioning to competing at the high school race level.
As a brand new program we do have to limit the size of our team to 12 riders due to coach availability. The program runs Monday through Wednesday at the following times: Monday and Tuesday - 4-6pm & Wednesday - 2-5pm. The first practice will be Wednesday, September 6, running Mon/Tues/Wed through October 12, 2023. Please email cowboymtb@gmail.com for more information.
New Cell Phone Policy
Students may use cell phones and personal earbuds/headphones before and after school only. During the school day, cell phones and personal earbuds/headphones should be stored in lockers or backpacks. If a student needs to communicate with parents/guardians during the school day, they should do so from the office.
