Hello Laker Community,

This year we are going through the accreditation process and we need survey feedback from families and students. Most of the items have a one-sentence description and you select a response on a 1-5 scale. There are approximately 25 items and it should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous and if you submitted a response earlier this year you do not need to resubmit. Here are the links to the two surveys:

LOSD’s first-annual Winter Break Read-A-Thon is a fun new program developed by our high school students. Elementary students will learn about it during their school library time this coming week. Watch this darling video to learn more.

All in our community are invited to get involved. Encourage reading and support students all for a good cause! Financial donations will go to our Lake Oswego Public Library and SMART Reading, an Oregon-based organization that provides access to books and reading sessions to students in need.

As a culmination of their ACS class, LOHS freshmen create a resume and learn how to interview for an entry-level job. We need many volunteers to make this an effective program and empower our students with practical skills. This is one of the few volunteer opportunities that enables you to be in the classroom at LOHS. We will be hosting the ACS Mock Interview program for first semester students from January 9-12, 2023 in person at Lake Oswego High School.

Volunteers on Monday and Tuesday, January 9 and 10, will work with small groups of students in the classroom to practice for a job interview with a pre-set curriculum. Volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday, January 11 and 12, will interview students individually for a typical entry-level high school job.

To volunteer, please complete two steps:

SENIOR PHOTOS
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Monday, January 9, 2023
Yearbook’s primary goal for the senior section is to have an individual portrait of each senior. Should you choose not to have formal portraits taken, please have regular school ID pictures taken at registration, and/or see Ms. Wray about having a yearbook photographer take your picture with one of our cameras.
Guidelines:
● Vertical orientation
● Minimum resolution of 300 DPI
● Face should fill approximately 1/3 of the photo frame
● School appropriate, avoiding props, hats, etc.

Submission:
1. Go to yearbookordercenter.com
2. Enter our school’s order number: 14951 (or just search for the school by name)
3. Click on “Send Images with Eshare.” This will take you to eshare.
4. Enter contact info.
5. Click on “Upload General Photos”
a. Select the photo from your computer, ensuring it follows the guidelines provided above
b. Provide Grade, Full Name, and “SENIOR PHOTO” as description
c. Click “continue” and “submit photos”
d. You’re all set!

Parents or guardians of the Class of 2023 may choose to purchase an optional Senior Baby Photo Ad for their senior. If purchased, their selected baby picture(s) and personal message to their senior will be published in the Laker Log yearbook. There are four different baby ad options this year: small (1/8 page), medium (1/4 page), large (1/2), and full-page.

Small - $70 [1/8 page, 1 photo, maximum 200 character message]

Medium - $90 [1/4 page, 2 photos, maximum 350 character message]

Large - $125 [1/2 page, 3 photos, maximum 700 character message]

Full-page - $200 [1 page, 7 photos, maximum 1500 character message]

To purchase an ad, the following is required:

1. Upload your photos and write your message in this form.

2. Pay the fee corresponding to your baby ad size on the LOHS webstore or mail payment via check to LOHS, attn: Jami Wray, Yearbook Adviser, PO Box 310, Lake Oswego, OR 97034.

If your payment AND form are not received by Tuesday, January 17th, your baby ad will not be in the book.

The school literary magazine, Reflections, is starting the production of a 2023 issue and would like to recruit interested students to serve as Literary/Art Board members. Here's the link for anyone who is interested in learning more about it!

Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources. SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools. In addition, below are reporting methods for parents-guardians or students to use to report issues related to racist, bias, or harassment incidents.

Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our school is participating in the Student Health Survey (SHS), a survey sponsored by the Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division and the Oregon Department of Education. The survey will gather information about health risk behaviors of students in grades 11. The survey will be conducted online in the classroom and includes questions about:

• Student health and safety

• Student mental and behavioral health

• School climate and culture

Completing the Student Health Survey poses minimal risk to your child, who may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable answering some of the questions. Survey procedures have been designed to protect your child's privacy and allow for anonymous participation. If your child is not comfortable answering a question, he or she can leave it blank. While we encourage all students to participate, the decision to participate is voluntary. You may opt to send a refusal for your child’s participation. Alternatively, your child will have the opportunity to refuse at the time of the survey. There will be no action against you or your child if your child does not participate.

If you do not wish your child to take this survey, return this form to the principal’s office before the survey date of December 12th. You need only return this form if you do not wish your child to participate.
