ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Dear Parents,
As we move into the 2nd semester, I want to remind everyone the procedures for when your student is absent. When your student is absent, please remember to send a note with your student when they return. You can also email the note to smithattendance@cfisd.net. Your note does not wipe away the absence but dictates if the truancy officer will become involved with a family for excessive absences, and communicates to the state the reason for the student’s absence. If a student misses 10 or more days in any class period during a semester they will lose credit for their classes. In Middle and High School each class counts as an hour of the day. When a student goes over the 10 days, they will have 7 hours per day to make up. Your student’s Assistant Principal will be communicating with you and your student about how to recover these hours.
Your student is responsible for any work and assessments that they missed while they were out. If your student misses a Test, Quiz or RA they will have to stay after school to take it at our Opportunity Lab. The teacher will inform the student what day they need to stay after. Students will not be able to complete these assessments during the school day. This will ensure your student does not miss any additional first-time instruction and fall further behind in their classes.
In addition, your student will arrange with their teacher the opportunity to make up any other missing classwork. Graded work cannot be done at home. Work will not be provided remotely to students, and Cypress Fairbanks ISD does not offer virtual instruction. Your student will be given the same number of days they were absent to complete these assignments. Any work not turned in by the deadline will receive a zero.
With the Spring Break coming up I want to remind everyone to schedule your travel days, so your student does not miss school. We do not give work in advance. Your student will have to make up the work when they return. This will have a major impact at the end of the year grades. Should your student miss days before Spring Break, they will receive zeros for their assignments. They will need to immediately return and make up the work. One day absent = one day to make up work. Should this cause them to fail for the grading period, and they are a student who participates in a U.I.L. activity they will be ineligible until the next Progress Report. There are no exceptions.
I want to finish by encouraging you and your student to check Home Access Center (HAC). There are limitations to how late an assignment will be accepted for a grade. Please visit the Smith Middle School Website for our student handbook, and our Grading, Redo and Late Work Policy.
I want to thank you for your continued support.
