Principal's Message
Shout out to our UNIFIED CHAMPIONS TEAM
We have a UNIFIED CHAMPIONS TEAM of staff that meet frequently to discuss and plan ways for increased inclusion opportunities for all of our students. We are about to start meeting weekly with our Special Olympians and their partners. In these meetings the partnership will engage in fun activities so they can start getting to know each other and build strong partnerships! We are proud of the inclusive work this team does for SLEE ;)ELA Acceleration Academy begins on Tuesday, February 20th and ends on Friday, February 23rd. We are able to sign up 96 students for this important opportunity of accelerated learning.

We wanted to send out a special thank you to our amazing custodial staff! Our school wouldn’t look as amazing as it does without them, especially when there is a snowy day. Remember to give them a big thank you when you see them in the hallway! We appreciate all you do!
Student Support Team
SST is working hard to put together incentives for our students and teachers. In our hallways you will find big posters that show how each classroom is doing with hopes to win class of the month. It is exciting to see the trophy passed around from class to class.

ILP/PA Classroom News
PA2 is working on their ELA unit with the book The Red Raincoat. They are learning verbs and verb tenses in ELA, finding the difference in math and weather in science! PA1 and ILP1 started a new unit called Sam and Penny and learning parts of the body. They are also working on the expectations of working in centers and practicing transitioning from on activity to the next

1st Grade News
First Graders are learning...
SEL: For social emotional learning we have been learning about empathy and understanding how others are feeling. We are also discussing acts of kindness we can do everyday!
Math: Students are learning about groups of tens. We are beginning to add double digits using place value, adding the ones place and then the tens place.
Skills: Students have been practicing their bossy R sounds; ar,er,or in unit 4. We are reading The Green Fern Zoo, an informational reader where we are learning about different animals.
Listening and Learning: We are learning about Ancient civilizations Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. We are having fun learning about their farming, writing, cultures, and leaders.

2nd Grade News
Second graders are learning...
Skills: We are currently on Unit 4 of Skills. The students are reading about a girl named Kim who goes through New York City to find a summer job. We are working on alternative spellings for long vowel sounds such as ‘ow’ making two sounds, and ‘y’ making four sounds.
Math: We finished up our Geometry unit and are moving back to addition and subtraction within 1,000 using different strategies.
Knowledge: We are currently learning about Westward Expansion in the 1800’s, and how the United States expanded west. We learn the different types of transportation that were used to make the travel easier, faster, and safer.
SEL: For SEL this month we are covering Black History Month. We will read and talk about influential figures, challenges they overcame, and how they impacted equality and

3rd Grade News
Third graders are learning...
ELA: We are traveling deep into space to learn all about our solar system as well as some of the famous individuals who have explored it! As we read these nonfiction texts, we are also working on practicing comprehension skills around main idea and details, nonfiction text features, and comparing and contrasting. Ask your 3rd grader a fact about space!
Math: We have just started one of our biggest units - fractions! Students are learning how to show and represent fractions both using pictures as well as number lines. We are building a strong foundation to help us understand how we can reason about their size through comparison and equivalency. There are lots of fun ways you can help support learning about fractions - like baking with your son or daughter!

We are so grateful for your constant support with our 3rd graders this year, we feel very lucky to be able to work with each and everyone of you. As we reach 100 days of school, it’s important to us that you know that so we can continue to ensure that every student continues to succeed.

4th Grade News
Fourth graders are learning...
ELA: We are excited to say that we have started a new unit about geology! The students have been learning about the different kinds of rocks. We have also started descriptive writing.
Math: In math we have just started a new unit too! We are learning all about fractions. Specifically learning about where fractions go on a number line, mixed numbers, and improper fractions.
4th Grade Reminders

Please make sure that students dress appropriately. The weather can be fluctuating so make sure students come with a jacket and a sweater/sweatshirt.
5th Grade News
5th graders are learning...
Math: This month students will use various strategies to multiply and divide with fractions. They will multiply fractions by whole numbers and by fractions, divide whole numbers by unit fractions and unit fractions by whole numbers, and convert customary measurements. Students are encouraged to continue mastering basic multiplication and division facts, in order to fluently multiply and divide fractions.
ELA: This month students have been learning about poetry. They will read poems from many different backgrounds and countries. They will read and write poems with different rhyme schemes, as well as free verse. They will continue the use of figurative language as well as the use of different poetic devices such as apostrophe, villanelle, and anaphora.
Science: This month the students are learning about the water cycle and how it affects weather and climate. Students will also learn how to protect our water sources by engineering water filtration devices. After our water cycle unit we will transition to learning about ecosystems.

PACCK- Hi SLEE families! This month is all about becoming the best leaders that we can be. This week we are working on the 5 key steps to fulfill this character trait of Leadership: Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Making good choices, and having a positive mindset.
Gym- Hi SLEE families! This rotation students will be focusing on perseverance. They will learn the importance of never giving up, trying their best, and figuring out ways to be successful. They will be working on their skills by playing Turn Back Tag and Team Switch.
Art- Hi families! This month in art class we will be starting on some weaving, printmaking, and clay projects while learning about pop art and cubism.
Science- Hi families! In science, some students are learning about the forces that act upon structures and building skyscraper prototypes to withstand wind and the weight of a load. Others are learning about density, mass, volume, and building boat prototypes that are supposed to float while carrying cargo. Some students are learning about plant parts and their functions, and others are learning about minerals and mimicking the process of the rock cycle to create sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock prototypes. Please send your student’s pet permission slip in if it isn’t completed yet. Thanks and have a wonderful February vacation (unless you’re doing Acceleration Academy- then I’ll see you there)!
Music- Hello families, Music classes this time of year study about the life and works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We are exploring his opera “Magic Flute” and learning about opera as a genre. We also progress in learning rhythmic figures and patterns using drums. The singing is focusing on spirituals, such as “This Little Light of Mine” and “There is a Little Wheel Turning in My Heart.”
Theater- Hi families! Students are working on isolations and high impact movement in dance class. They’re also working with technical theatre elements and stage lights.

They have a variety of courses that range from beginner to advanced in ceramics, stained glass, drawing, painting, digital art, and animation.

Lawrence Boys and Girls Club is a great place for students to participate in different activities like sports and arts afterschool.

- We are still selling SMENCILS for $1.00 each. Students can purchase in the office during the school day. Be on look out for holiday SMENCILS too.
- We sent out order forms to order school t-shirts and we still have some left. If you still want a shirt please turn in order form to the office (cash only).

- With colder weather setting in, please ensure your student has appropriate clothing for playing outside at recess. We really try to go outside most days unless the weather is really bad to let students get fresh air and run around. Hats and gloves are encouraged as it gets colder!
- Also it is important to remind your child that they can not share food due to allergies. We would really appreciate this!
