Fostering community with rock, paper, scissors...
One of the strategies our staff regularly uses to foster interactions and build community among our students is the use of Community Circles. The teacher gives a topic and classmates take turns expressing their thoughts, feelings and ideas.
Many of our teachers also engage with students through team-building activities. Such was the case recently with AP Psychology, Psychology and Government teacher Mrs. Mary Ann Stedry, who held a Rock, Paper and Scissor Tournament in each of her classes. The winners included:
1st Hour: Logan Bowles
2nd Hour: Gavin Smith
3rd Hour: Gavin Arnold
4th Hour: Chloe Mills
5th Hour: Grace Coulter
6th Hour: Justin Argue
DHS/DAE names Students of the Month for January
Congratulations to the Davison High School/Davison Alternative Education Students of the Month for January:
9th grade - Noah Reed
Nominated by: Mr. James Woods
Mr. Noah Reed is attentive, dependable, and above all he is supportive of the learning of students around him. Noah was designated as a group leader in Spanish 1. As a group leader he helped his teammates to self monitor, self manage, and become self reliant. As a result of his student leadership, his team members elevated their status. Students who were struggling now are scholars in their class. He worked tirelessly to assist them with vocabulary and grammar. He helped establish a positive synergy in his group that spilled over into the classroom community. Thank you, Noah for your bottomless passion to help others!
10th grade - Addison Turkington
Nominated by: Mrs. Tracey Fowler
Addison is an outstanding young lady. She's in the ROTC preparatory program and has aspirations to become a pilot. She's inspiring to those around her. For example, she is petite, but her strong-mindedness and dedication have earned her top marks in physical feats in ROTC. In fact, she outranked most of the people at her level in recent shooting exercises. She pushes herself until she exceeds her own goals! In addition to being motivated, she is kind, engaged and supportive to every person she encounters. The respect she shows for adults and peers alike is so refreshing. I always look forward to seeing her and hearing about what is new in her day. She inquires how others are doing and genuinely listens to their responses. Furthermore, she's a great student, always submitting exemplary work.
11th grade - Olivia Gartrell
Nominated by: Mrs. Christina Oskey
I would like to nominate Olivia Gartrell for DHS Student of the Month for consistently being courteous, attentive, respectful, dependable and supportive. Olivia is always kind to her classmates and is quick to lend a helping hand when needed. Her work is always accurate and neat and done to the highest standard. Olivia is also a dedicated athlete, who is able to juggle both her academic and athletic responsibilities exceptionally. Olivia is beyond deserving of this award for her commitment to her studies and for her positive attitude.
12th grade - Sydney Smith
Nominated by: Mr. Mike Crongeyer
Sydney has a 3.9 GPA taking AP classes all while being THE leader of our cross country team. She was an integral part of us running at the team state finals this fall. She supported her teammates and made new kids to the team feel welcome. She does the same thing in the classroom, always including students and helping when she can. I can't think of a student more deserving of a student of the month award.
DAE - Denith Miller
Nominated by: Mr. Christopher Friske
Denith is extremely dependable and can always be counted on to be early to class and prepared for learning. He is an outgoing individual that can relate to nearly any one of his peers and he shows them great respect throughout their interactions. Denith is a polite young man and a model student and I am thankful to have him in class!

MSP Seeking Fifth Graders to Participate in Annual Poster Contest
There are currently more than 670 missing children in Michigan. While many children return home, some unfortunately do not.
To raise awareness, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Missing Persons Clearinghouse invites fifth grade students to participate in the 2024 National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest. The annual contest creates an opportunity to promote child safety while discussing the issue of missing and/or exploited children.
Michigan’s winning artist will have a shot at the national contest, which includes a free trip to Washington D.C. and the opportunity to have their artwork featured as the National Missing Children’s Day poster.
Submissions are due by February 2, 2024.
The application and contest rules can be found by clicking on the link below.

Next week's Character Trait: Perseverance
Perseverance can be directly connected to an individual’s ability to be successful throughout their life. Those who persevere through setbacks often reap the benefits of the success gained by refusing to give up. Sometimes, this comes with the added benefit of increased knowledge and skill as a result of the work needed to achieve. Perseverance is also connected with bravery. Persisting in a task and failing, can result in depleted self-esteem. Therefore, it takes bravery to persist in a task despite the fear of failure.
