Punctuality: An Important Part of School Life at F.R. Haythorne Junior High School
At F.R. Haythorne Junior High School, we see punctuality as a critical aspect of creating a conducive learning environment. Recently, however, we've been grappling with an increasing number of incidents of students arriving late at the start of the school day and throughout the day.
We believe our collective aim is to ensure our kids grasp the best possible educational experiences provided at school. In this regard, we feel it is important to revisit our guidelines on both handling absences and the consequences of continual tardiness.
Reinforcing the Late Policy
Whenever a student is absent, for any reason, we require a message from a parent or guardian, communicated either via a call to our school voicemail at 780-467-3800, or through an email or note to the office. Students who are categorised as absent during the attendance check without previous notification from parents or guardians end up marked as an unexcused absence. Parents or guardians will promptly receive an email notification regarding any such unexcused absence.
The Consequences of Being Late
We understand that occasional lateness can happen; however, in the case of recurring tardiness, we employ a systematic approach involving:
- 4 lates: Results in a Lunch Hour Detention
- 8 lates: Involves a Meeting with an Administrator
- 12 lates: Triggers a Letter Home
- 16 lates: Leads to an In-School Suspension
- 17 and more lates: Are handled at the Administration's Discretion
This late policy operates not only at the start of the school day, but also applies to students who are late for any class during the day. If your child is late, please make sure we receive a note, call, or email about it.
Please note that, upon arrival, it's mandatory for late students to check in at the office; only then are they allowed into their class. Remember that the numbrt of lates will be reset at the semester change.
Punctuality: A Shared Responsibility
As parents, it's crucial we understand that it is in this formative stage that we instill the virtue of punctuality in our children. It's a valuable lifelong skill that bears significance even beyond the school environment. Together, let's ensure that perpetually being late does not become a hurdle in our children's academic journeys.
Your invaluable support and understanding in these matters is highly regarded and appreciated, and we extend our thanks for your cooperation.

Complete your Returning Student Registration: February 8-21
Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) returning student registration process is now open. All current students, except Grade 12, must complete the online Returning Student Registration Form to confirm their enrolment in a school for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. All current EIPS students are required to complete the form by Feb. 21, 2024.
To complete your child’s returning student registration, refer to the Returning Student Registration Form email you received from Elk Island Public Schools via Permission Click on February 8. Families will receive one email for each student. No log in is required to complete the form.
For more information, contact the school directly.

Complete the Alberta Education Assurance Survey
Once again, Alberta Education is surveying teachers, students and families through its annual Alberta Education Assurance (AEA) Survey. The survey gathers feedback on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools, which they then use to help understand how they’re doing and plan for the future.
Throughout February, Grade 7 students at F.R. Haythorne Junior High are completing the survey online at the school. Student participation is voluntary and completely anonymous. Students are assigned a random username and password to ensure survey responses aren’t linked to any individual student. The survey doesn’t take long to complete and is done within the school day during regular class time.
Additionally, parents and guardians of students in these grades are also asked to take a survey online. Alberta Education has mailed families information about the survey directly. As with the student and teacher survey, it’s anonymous and asks questions about your school experiences. If you have a child in these grades, we encourage you to participate. The survey deadline is March 1, 2024.
Results from the AEA Survey are provided to Elk Island Public Schools each spring. The Division then uses the data to inform its four-year education plan, school education plans and strategies for continuous improvement. Each fall, the results are also shared with EIPS families and school communities in the Division’s Annual Education Results Report.

Has your contact information recently changed?
Have you recently moved or has your contact information changed? F.R. Haythorne Junior High encourages families to review the information the Division has on file to ensure it’s up to date. Using the Student Information Update available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal, families can review the current information on file for each student—including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts, medical details and other related information—and submit any updates needed.
Reviewing and updating the form ensures the school and Division have the most up-to-date information regarding your child. Your review is especially important as the Division prepares for 2024-25 registration processes beginning in the new year.
NOTE: Only submit updates for the changes that have already taken place. If you’re moving later this school year, you’ll submit the necessary updates to your information through the Student Information Update after you’ve moved.
If you have questions about the form or any trouble with your Parent Portal account, contact the school office at 780-467-3800.
