Spartan Weekly 23-24
Shepard Middle School (10/13)
Friday the 13th
Welcome to the Weekend Spartan Families:
The safety and security of our students is our top priority. I am happy to report that we had a wonderful, typical day of school on this Friday the 13th. As the world continues to necessitate a focus on security, we stand ready to provide our students and families with a safe place for learning and growing.
Thinking about all with family, loved ones and connections to the war and atrocities unfolding. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can help support your child in any way. This is a difficult time for our community, our country and our brothers and sisters in Israel, but with unity and support for one another, we will overcome.
Hug your family!
Mr.C

Washington DC Trip
Last weekend, I had the privilege of joining many of our 8th graders on their annual Washington D.C. trip. With long days, late nights, 80,000 steps and tons of fun learning experiences, it was memorable for all. Below you will find many pictures from the trip showcasing my favorite thing about our visit to our Nation's Capital....seeing the joy and camaraderie of our students as they learned about the history and culture of The United States of America.

The Importance of Attending School
Parents & Guardians,
Our goal in District 109 is to work together to ensure the success of every child. As we are entering the month of October, we want to remind you that regular student attendance is vital to your child’s success. We are committed to working with you, our families, to achieve this goal by supporting your family with any concerns regarding student attendance.
As a reminder, if your child is going to be absent from school, please reach out to your building’s nurse as soon as possible to discuss the reason for the absence.
SHEPARD: You can call Mrs. Farrar at 847-948-0620 x5103 or email to report an absence at shepardattendance@dps109.org.
If we do not hear from you by 10:00 a.m., our school teams will continue attempts to contact parents/guardians and will also begin contacting emergency contacts. If we are still unable to reach you, we will work in collaboration with our School Resource Officer to conduct a wellness check.
DID YOU KNOW?
Chronic Absenteeism is defined as absences totaling 10 percent or more of school days (including both excused and unexcused absences). If your child is absent 18 days or more (based on an average 180-day school year) then your child will be considered chronically absent.
Chronic Truancy is defined as absences totaling 5 percent or more of school days without a valid excuse. If your child has 9 or more unexcused absences (based on an average 180-day school year) then they will be considered chronically truant.
We are here to work with our families to support positive school attendance. If there is anything we can do to better assist you and your child, please do not hesitate to let us know. There are many people in our building ready to help address any challenges in getting to school regularly or on time. We can also help identify barriers to regular attendance and implement key resources to support your family in these efforts.
Turn in Health Forms!
PHYSICALS: All new students, Early Learners, kindergarteners, and 6th graders must have an updated health form on file by October 15th or they will be excluded from school.

UPCOMING DISCUSSION: HOW TO RAISE AN ADULT
Deerfield Parent Network, in partnership with Districts 109, 112 and 113, is pleased to announce Julie Lythcott-Haims’ presentation, “How to Raise Successful Kids” on November 30th at 7:30 pm at Deerfield High School’s Auditorium.
Julie Lythcott-Haims is the New York Times best selling author of “How to Raise an Adult''. Drawing on research; conversations with admissions officers, educators, and employers; and on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean, Julie Lythcott-Haims highlights the ways in which over-parenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. Mark your calendars - this is sure to be a great program! While walk-ins are always welcome, DPN is asking that you RSVP for planning purposes.
