From your Principal
Dear Buena Vista Parents,
We have been busy working and learning at Buena Vista. Please join us for Back to School Night this evening. Come hear from your child's classroom teacher about what to expect this year.
Student Learning
This week was I able to go into Ms. Mes' transitional kindergarten class and watch as our youngest learners learned about the days of the week and important parts of the calendar. Mrs. Butler's kindergarten class was learning about their numbers and counting to five. They were practicing counting visually in a quick flash and then replicating the number they saw onto at tens frames with colored counters. There was no tricking them, they were reading the numbers so fast!
Mrs. Bockser's 5th grade class was busy during math building models and finding surface area. They were working collaboratively on this high thinking concept. Once they built the model using connecting cubes, they then had to show their work on how to solve the problem using their math knowledge. It was hard but they kept working at it.
In first grade, Mrs. Thompson's class was practicing their reading. They were choral reading books with familiar words and tracking with their fingers. They were reading the classic Eric Carle book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear. When they were finished with this familiar book, they read an adaptation about sandwiches. They used their knowledge about the word and sentence patterns in the familiar story to help them predict what was coming in the adaptation.
Mrs. Sumnicht's second grade class is learning about the physical properties of matter and thinking about all of the ways they can describe those properties. They worked collaboratively in science lab to think about how an eraser, pom-pom, a bag of water, a basketball, a bottle of vinegar, a magnifying lens and a plastic spoon are alike and how they are different. This lesson concentrated on solid and liquid matter. Students worked together with Mr. Cooper and Mrs. Sumnicht to come up with descriptive ideas and record them.
Safety
Buena Vista is a closed campus. That means that during the school day, you must check in at the office and get a visitor's pass to come onto school grounds. If you are picking up or dropping of a late start TK or Kinder student we ask that you wait with your child in the pick up and drop off area (where the students line up.)
There are no dogs allowed on campus unless they are a registered service dog. All visitors with a registered service dog must check in at the office. We appreciate your support in keeping your pets at home during drop off and pick up!

Walnut Creek School District is pleased to announce the launch of the Extended Learning Opportunity Program. This program is available at each of our school sites and offers enriching opportunities for students from school dismissal until 6:00 pm. Please visit our Extended Learning website here to learn about the program. If you click on your children's school(s) on the right hand side, you will learn more about the provider at that particular site. You will also be able to view the recorded parent information session, which answers most questions. Enrollment is open to all students. Some families qualify for free tuition based on income. If you believe your family may qualify, please complete the free/reduced meal application here. You will then be notified if you qualify for free tuition. To register for the program, please visit the provider's website.
Buena Vista PTA is looking for a volunteer to chair the Reflections Art Program for this year!
This is a fun volunteering opportunity and helps to support our wonderful student artists through film production, music composition, visual arts, dance choreography, literature, and photography. The time commitment is attending a zoom meeting, collecting art pieces, and helping to set up the showcase which usually happens in the beginning of December. It is a great way to volunteer, and is not too time consuming. If interested, please email Katie McSherry at kbmcsherry@gmail.com.
