News from Spaulding High School
Note from Principal Roy
Dear Spaulding High Community,
I hope this message finds you well as we transition into the vibrant season of fall. It's my pleasure to provide you with an update on the exciting events and activities taking place at Spaulding High School as we head deeper into the academic year. I will be sending monthly updates telling you about all of the opportunities we have for students.
Academic Excellence: Our dedicated faculty and staff continue to uphold a commitment to academic excellence. We encourage all students to take advantage of the academic support services available to them, including tutoring and counseling, to ensure their continued success. E-block will begin soon and students can recover competencies and receive extra help.
This runs Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30. Please reach out to your school counselor to register. In addition, our National Honor Society students have also established a schedule with opportunities for students to receive peer tutoring in our media center.
Innovative Opportunities: We have several innovative programs and initiatives aimed at enriching the educational experience. From STEM-focused clubs to community service opportunities, there are numerous ways for students to explore their interests and passions beyond the classroom. Consider joining Robotics, the Debate Team, or our Model United Nations club. These academic teams all compete statewide.
Extracurricular Activities: We have very active clubs and activities. I encourage all students to get involved in clubs or teams that align with their interests. Participation in extracurriculars not only enhances personal growth but also fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie. You can find an entire list with times and advisors on our website.
College and Career Planning: For our upperclassmen, the college and career planning process is in full swing. Our counseling department is offering workshops, one-on-one guidance, and resources to support students in their post-high school endeavors. Parents, please stay connected with our counselors to ensure your child is on track for his or her desired path.
Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs): Students have opportunities to participate in ELOs that are designed to engage, educate, and empower students (future employees) to make informed career choices by creating educational experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom. They can take the form of an independent study, career internship, or work based learning. Students are paired with teacher mentors and community partners to create personalized learning opportunities and gain high school credit. If interested in learning more about ELOs, please contact our ELO Coordinators, Lauren Jerr, jerr.l@sau54.org and Jess Lovell, lovell.j@sau54.org.
Safety and Well-being: The safety and well-being of our students remain paramount. We have purchased a new entry system that tracks people in our school. We ask that all visitors check in at the main office, sign in, and then receive a badge with your photo displayed. We appreciate your cooperation and vigilance in ensuring the safety of our school community.
Mental Health supports: We offer various supports in our school for students that might be struggling.
Nicole Dale-Hogan, Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor, full time
Lisa Gauthier, Social Worker, full time
Michelle Asselin, My Turn, Wednesdays
Please reach out if you feel your child could use these supports.
Communication: Clear and open communication between home and school is essential. We encourage parents to stay informed about school events, updates, and important dates through our communication channels. Be sure you have added us on Facebook: Spaulding HS and Twitter: @SpauldingHS. We will also send monthly newsletters to your email and will post on Facebook. Please make sure you bookmark our website as we have worked very hard to update this with important information. https://www.rochesterschools.com/o/shs
We want to extend our gratitude to our students, parents, and staff for your continued dedication and support. Together, we create an environment where our students can thrive and reach their full potential.
Sincerely,
Mr. Roy
What is Advisory at SHS?
Advisory happens on Mondays and Fridays for 30 minutes. Each student has been assigned an Advisory teacher for the four years while at Spaulding. We have a unique opportunity for students to embark on a journey of self-discovery and career exploration with the help of the powerful program known as Xello. In this class, students engage in meaningful activities and discussions that empower them to envision their future paths. Xello provides a user-friendly platform where students can identify their interests, strengths, and goals. With Xello's assistance, students can explore various career options, plan their educational journeys, and make informed decisions about their future. It's a dynamic and interactive experience that equips our students with the tools they need to pave the way for a successful and fulfilling future.
