Black History Month
Dear Atholton Families,
The arrival of February 1 last week marked the beginning of Black History Month. Black History Month is a time to celebrate the many accomplishments of African Americans and recognize their central role in U.S. history, as well as a time to shine a light on the story of the larger Black diaspora. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month. While this month is designated as Black History Month, it is my hope that you continue to increase your knowledge of the Black diaspora all year. We can do this by delving deeper into the history, culture, and achievements of the Black community, and increasing our understanding of this country’s past and current issues around race.
I am excited for the upcoming Black History Month School-wide assembly at the end of the month. The Black Student Union has been working hard in preparation for an exciting show! Additionally, Atholton is hosting a Black History Month Door Decorating Contest with the theme of Influential Trail Blazers. Each content team will participate to highlight the contributions of African-Americans in their various content areas. I visited some classes as they were discussing what they are going to do and I can’t wait to see the results. I see some doors coming together as I travel around the building.
At Atholton we strive to create an inclusive, accessible, diverse, and equitable school community for everyone. Always remember that it is our stories and histories that unite us and make us better.
Our Parents of Black Students Association (PBSA) will provide a write-up each week for your information.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending our dance concert. It was the first dance concert in almost two years! Ms. Haffey and the students did an amazing job! I am always left speechless by the finale – WOW! I hope you had the opportunity to see the wonderful performance and that you place this annual event on your calendar!
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the UNDEFEATED boys basketball team! I have been present at EVERY game and amazed at the talent on this team. Coach Albert has done a great job in leading these young men as they make their way through the county annihilating the competition. Stay tuned for an announcement regarding spectators at games (fingers crossed!).
