Weekly Update
Hello Foster's Finest,
Today is one of those exciting days here at school: Trunk or Treat Day! I have to admit, this will be a first for me. I am excited to see what this tradition is all about. A special thank you and shout out to the members of the community who have helped to make this event happen. A big shout out to our staff who have volunteered their time to be judges for the event. I want to remind everyone that only kindergarten students should be bringing their costumes to school on Monday for the traditional kindergarten costume parade. Please make sure your costumes are school appropriate (no ninja swords, light sabers, or blasters etc.).
The Town Meeting next week on November 1 is our first big vote on the Building Project. The School Building Committee has been working on this project for many years. They have put in hours of work and deserve a big thank you from the community. Town Meeting is Democracy at its finest. November 8 is the second big vote. Successful votes in both instances are necessary for the project to occur.
If the two votes support the building of the new school, we anticipate Phase One of the project to begin on the week of Thanksgiving. Phase One of the project will begin with the construction of a fence to keep students and the public out of the construction zone. Then the construction of the temporary playground and the building of more parking in the front of the school will happen.
As I have mentioned in earlier updates, we will be without a playground for approximately 6 weeks. Our hope is that the playground will be opened the week we return from winter break. I want to thank the parents who came to school today to discuss options for making recess special while this is occurring. We generated some good ideas and over the next few weeks we will be firming them up.
After the playground and parking is created, there will be an access road built with retaining walls as the earth is moved from the hill. The dirt from the hill will be used to raise the ground where the building will sit, approximately nine to fourteen feet higher. The elevation of the land the building will sit on will lift it out of any floodplain. The work on Phase One will be completed no later than mid-June.
The First Grade Kindness Club will be making care packages for the military for our November project. We need your help! We will be collecting items for the packages in the lobby. Here is a list of items needed:
Candy (that won't melt)
Mints
Gum
Protein bars
Individual powder drink mix
Single serving beef jerky
Travel size toiletries (no aerosol cans)
Chapstick
Sunblock
Decks of cards
Small travel size games
I hope to see you all at Trunk or Treat this afternoon. Have a great weekend.
Mr. Scheufele
