2020 Bond Update
In August 2020, the Hickman Mills community said yes to invest in HMC-1 schools with the passage of a $30 million bond issue for various improvements across the district.
The first component of the bond was an asphalt and concrete package for Dobbs Elementary, Hickman campus, Baptiste campus and Ruskin High School. This package also included a small roof replacement at Warford Elementary, the beginnings of replacing the turf field at Ruskin, and installing parking lot gates at Dobbs, Hickman campus, Baptiste campus and Ruskin. December Applause Applause Honoree
Congratulations to our December Applause Applause honoree, Irvin T., fifth grade student at Ervin Elementary.
Throughout this school year, Irvin has demonstrated not only a concern for his academics but a concern for those of his classmates. He took the initiative to create a study Zoom link and invited his classmates to join. He has shown that there is a seed of community growing within that includes building others as he builds himself.
Meet Ruskin's Teen Author
At just ten years old, Tomie Mickai W., Ruskin High School tenth grader, published his first book, “Mighty Boy.”
Fast forward to four years later, and Tomie is the proud author of three more published books. He has a two-book series for “Mighty Boy,” and a new series called “Spirit Swords.” Two of the “Spirit Swords” books already are written, with a third in the works.

Help us welcome the new Assistant Principal at Smith-Hale, Dr. Chad Ryerson!
Dr. Ryerson is starting his 24th year in education. He began his education career as a teacher at Ruskin High School, where he taught social studies and coached varsity baseball, varsity softball and varsity girls basketball. He was promoted to Assistant Principal, then Principal, at Ruskin High School. He transitioned from the HMC-1 school district to North Kansas City High School, where he served as an assistant principal.
He is excited to be returning to HMC-1, and looks forward to completing his educational career in the district where he started. Welcome home, Dr. Ryerson!
HMC-1 Cerner Scholar Student Spotlight
Aliyah A., a senior at Ruskin High School, is part of the HMC-1’s PrepKC partnership and is now on year two of her Cerner Scholar Experience.
As one of 32 Cerner Scholars, Aliyah works alongside Cerner Corporation associates in a work-based learning experience. She is currently creating a dashboard that will allow stakeholders and edge partners to easily track and display data.
“Through this experience, I have discovered my passion for computer science and am 100% sure that this is what I want to do in my future,” said Aliyah. “I am thankful for this experience and for the chance to learn more about computers, programming and technology!”
Smith-Hale Awarded Grant
Congratulations to Smith-Hale Middle School for being awarded the Varsity Brands Empowerment Flash Grant that supports social and emotional learning in the classroom.
The grant will specifically provide for 150 Empowerment Journals, live, online professional development for teachers and staff implementing the Empowerment Journal Program, and a US Games Equipment Certificate.
