Community Update
November 5, 2021
Hello North Rockland Families,
The first week of November did not disappoint! There was much we celebrated in North Rockland.
At the Board of Education meeting, our students honored each of our board members with thoughtful gifts and special videos they made personally thanking them for all they have done for the various programs they are involved in throughout our schools. It was a special night filled with gratitude and performances that reminded me of why I am so proud to be the superintendent of this great District.
We also recognized our ten wonderful principals for their extraordinary efforts this year. They have been doing an incredible job and working tirelessly to provide the best education and leadership possible, and it’s time to give them a hand. Further below in the update you will find a profile on each of them and the culture they work passionately to create for each of our schools.
Finally we hosted a veterans appreciation ceremony, complete with gifts, treats, and an honorary video highlighting their service, for all the veterans currently working in our district. In North Rockland we feel it is crucial to acknowledge Veterans service to our nation. That is why next week our school's will be hosting a variety of events, classes and services recognizing these brave individuals. As a reminder there is no school next, Thursday November 11, in observance of Veteran's Day.
Next week marks the start of our winter productions and the holidays will be here before you know it! As we begin our third month of the 2021-22 school year, let's keep the momentum we have set over the last two. Our schools have continuously been filled with learning, teamwork, new friends, growth, competition, and above all else perseverance.

Tonight! Drama Society Presents “12 Angry Jurors”
The NRHS Drama Society presents the fall drama “12 Angry Jurors.” The shows run on November 5th and 6th at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors. Please join us!
Hybrid Parent/Teacher Conferences
In an effort to accommodate parents and limit capacity in our schools, NRCSD is hosting Hybrid Parent Teacher Conferences. While we know face-to-face conversations are a better option for some parents, we also understand the convenience of a virtual conference is more desirable for some families. Parents will be able to choose how they want to schedule their P/T conferences either in person, via Google Meet, or through a phone conference. This will serve to offer parents the option that works best for them while also reducing the number of visitors in our buildings for this event.
Please find a link to the schedule of the dates and time at each school building linked here.

NRHS & NRHS Extension Job Fair
Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life!
Every fall North Rockland High School and the NRHS Extension host daily college and career fairs, during school hours, over a full three week long period.
NRCSD's annual college/career fairs are designed to give our high school students, in all grades, the chance to explore career opportunities, meet prospective employers, practice professional behavior, and learn more about colleges and trades by talking one-on-one with admissions representatives. Agents from a variety of colleges, trade schools, local businesses, the military and beyond are all in attendance. They set up mini kiosks to provide interested learners with valuable information for their first ventures into the professional world or to help narrow down the options during their college search.
These fairs also give the business community a platform to develop early connections, with the potential for internships and/or future job openings. We were so happy to see so many of our Red Raiders take advantage of the terrific events #NRStrong!

Cafeteria Recycling Stations
One way North Rockland has been going green is by utilizing waste reduction stations instead of trash cans in our cafeterias like the one pictured here at FMS. #NRTogether students and staff are all able to drastically reduce their garbage by recycling at the mobile draining and sorting installation. By enabling users to pour out excess beverages, juices or milk, almost all the daily cartons, bottles and cans are being recycled. Implementing this sustainable waste reduction practice has drastically reduced the trash produced in our buildings and taught learners the importance of not wasting food.
The EPA estimates that during the holidays our household waste increases by a staggering 25%. Here are 5 ways you can join the Red Raiders in their mission to reduce food waste this holiday season!
- 1. Plan your meals. Instead of overbuying or buying in bulk, try to pick up only what you know will be eaten, and eat what you buy.
- 2. Try not to over prepare food, instead try to prepare “just enough.”
- 3. Encourage friends and family to take leftovers home.
- 4. Store leftovers in the freezer to enjoy after you’ve had a break from them for a little while.
- 5. Save the scraps! Search “holiday leftover recipes” online there are so many great new recipes.

Health
On November 2, 2021, following the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency use authorization (EUA) on October 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP’s) recommendation for children ages 5-11 to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. This is the first authorized vaccine to be permitted for use in this age group. All children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible to receive a two-dose primary series of the pediatric formulation Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, effective immediately. Parents or guardians with questions about the vaccine are encouraged to talk to their child’s pediatrician or another trusted healthcare provider.

NR Weekly Positive Case Report
***NRCSD continues to work tirelessly to ensure that all health and safety protocols are working effectively. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to make sure all safety protocols are followed at all times—in and out of school— so we can mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We must work together in partnership—schools, families, and students—and be mindful of the great responsibility we all have to protect ourselves and those around us. This virus can be present without any symptoms. That fact alone can lead to the unintentional infection of others.
