THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - February 16, 2024
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear HCS Families,
Did you know that HCS student artists are participating in the Champlain Valley Regional Art Show at the University Mall in South Burlington? There is artwork from all grade levels and very unique styles with many different types of materials. The exhibit runs through March 8.
This year, HCS students transitioned to creating artwork using a choice based model called TAB, Teaching for Artistic Behavior. TAB operates under the following core tenets:
- The child is an artist.
- The art room is the child’s studio.
- What do artists do?
Our goal in the HCS art rooms is to create independent thinkers, creatives and artists. We want our students to understand there are unlimited possibilities for making art, and that they have the capacity to become the artists they want to be while being held to high standards for their artistic behavior.
We hope you have a moment to stop by the University Mall to visit the exhibit!
Warmly,
Suzan and Tim

🐧 HCS PENGUIN PLUNGERS RAISE $11,500 FOR VT SPECIAL OLYMPICS!🐧
38 middle school students took part in the annual Penguin Plunge at the Burlington Waterfront on Saturday. The HCS team raised $11,500 for the Vermont Special Olympics. Thank you to all who supported our team! Special shoutout to Nora Cudney for raising a team high $1,700!
HCS SAFETY COMMITTEE
Our safety committee consists of a diverse membership involving key staff representation, including staff who have specialized roles or more flexible availability in the event of a crisis. Our Mission is to continuously improve the knowledge, skills, and preparedness related to personal and institutional safety. We maintain a regular monthly meeting time to keep the important work moving forward, review feedback from recent emergency drills, study possible emergency scenarios, and tighten relationships with first-responder partners in the community. We access expert consultation from a safety consultant contracted by the VT Agency of Education. We are so grateful for our community partners.
There is, however, one key player missing on our team currently; a Hinesburg community member. This role will include attending regular monthly meetings and providing a community perspective during committee discussions. If you are interested, please complete this three question form .
In terms of school safety, we will never be “done” improving our habits, routines, and procedures in order to help us be prepared and stay safe in different types of emergencies. On behalf of the Safety Committee, I thank you for your partnership in this work.

UPDATE ON CVSD PROPOSED BUDGET

At next week's School Board meeting on Tuesday, 2/20 at 6:00 pm, the full board will come together to discuss it and work towards a decision on how to move forward.
On Wednesday, 2/21 at 6:30 pm, the district's administration and school board will host a virtual Town Hall. The focus of this Town Hall is to provide the latest information available about the proposed budget and answer questions.
We hope you can join us for these events. See the calendar on the left side of the district's homepage for details about how to attend. https://www.cvsdvt.org/ We will share another update next week.

FLAVORED TOBACCO BAN SUPPORTED BY HCS VKAT STUDENTS AT VERMONT STATEHOUSE!
Part of CVSD Connecting Youth's work includes creating opportunities for youth empowerment and advocacy. This past week, 25 WCS and HCS students gathered in Montpelier in support of S.18 - Vermont's bill to ban flavored tobacco products. Our students bravely shared their stories on the capitol steps, spoke to legislators caucusing on the floor, and generally had an unmissable presence in the State House all morning.
These advocates didn't just stand up, they spoke up, inspiring all with their passion and conviction. Connecting Youth is proud to amplify their voices, and we encourage you to join them in advocating for a healthier future!
