BARFIELD BANNER
FEBRUARY 2024
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for your support throughout the month of January! We had an awesome Literacy Week, which created great experiences for our students and families. Thank you to our families that attended Literacy Night. As a school, we felt that this was the most successful one yet! It was wonderful to see students synergizing with their friends and family. We look forward to creating similar events in the future! Quarter 2 Report Cards were sent home last week. Please make sure you review your child’s progress and reach out to their teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Your support from home is very important to ensure each student’s success!
As we move into February, look for information from your child’s teacher regarding Student Led Conferences. SLC is something we do each year in February. It is a great way for parents to come in and hear about their child’s progress- from their child! Student Led Conferences allow the students to share their Leadership Notebooks, which include goal setting and celebrations. Each teacher/grade level schedules these conferences a little differently, so please look for more information to come.
I would like to extend a shout-out to our TBE PTO! While our PTO has always supported our school, this year they have taken their support to a whole new level. Please take the time to read their portion of the Barfield Banner below and look for more upcoming events. TBE appreciates all parent and community support!
While it is over a month away, TBE will be working hard to prepare for our 3rd Annual Leadership Day! This year, we will hold Leadership Day on Friday, March 8th. For those new to TBE, Leadership Day is a day that we celebrate being a Leader in Me School. Our students showcase all the varying aspects of Leader in Me and share our beautiful school with fellow CCPS educators and community members. While Leadership Day is not a parent event, we appreciate your support in ensuring your child participates that day! We will have dozens of leadership opportunities and ALL students will have a role in one way or another. It truly is one of my favorite events and I am looking forward to hearing from the students what their vision is this year.
Thank you again for your support! Looking forward to a great month ahead!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ledbetter

FIRST GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
As we wrap up the first half of the school year, it is fun to look back and reflect on all that we have learned and all the fun that we have had!
Before break, we spent some time sharpening the saw with Gingerbread Day and Field Day. The students had a blast planning and decorating their gingerbread houses, as well as showing off all the skills they have learned in P.E. this year during Field Day.
Now that we are back into the swing of things, we are continuing our reading module about American holidays, symbols, and monuments. Students have a great time learning about the history of our country and all the ways we celebrate that history. They have continued to practice locating and using text features to better understand their reading. We also had a chance to read some poetry and identify some of the ways that poets make poems so fun to read! In math, we finished our unit on addition and subtraction word problems and now shifting the focus to place value and how we can show numbers in different ways. Please take time to review the math letters sent home with each unit for great ideas on how to assist your student.
As always, we so appreciate your support at home with nightly reading and any additional homework. We are looking forward to a great second half of the school year!

SECOND GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
We cannot believe we are halfway through the school year already! We have been having so much fun these past few months.
In Language Arts, students are reading informational texts about how weather affects us. Students will further their learning of theme in poetry, author’s purpose, central idea, text features and retelling text to enhance comprehension. In Fundations (Phonics) time, we are starting Unit 9 which will focus on combining r-controlled syllables with er, ir, and ur with other syllable types. We will also start practicing our dictionary skills. As always, please continue to encourage your child to read nightly for 20 minutes. At school they can take quizzes on the books they have read and earn Reading Counts points.
In Math, we will finish learning about measurement and then we will begin learning strategies of decomposing and adjusting addends to add as well as using a number line to add and subtract 3-digit numbers. Please encourage your child to continue improving their math fact fluency with flash cards or simple addition problems with sums to twenty (20).
In Science, we will finish our habitat unit with the students at home diorama projects. We cannot wait to see the amazing creations your kids have made! We will then be starting our life cycle unit.
Thank you, parents, for your continued support at home. We truly appreciate you all so much!

THIRD GRADE NEWS
Parents,
We are starting the third quarter out right! Third graders have been hard at work learning new things!
The students are still working on their multiplication fluency in Math. Multiplication is a large part of the 3rd grade math curriculum and the students have been practicing their skip counting chants. Please have your child continue to practice these chants at home. The students also learned how to use strategies to add and subtract multi-digit numbers.
In Reading, we built knowledge about what sports can teach us about working together and began discussing what behaviors help animals survive. Students focused on explaining how text features contribute to the meaning of a text, identifying central ideas, and the development of an author’s purpose. They also worked on summarizing a text to enhance comprehension across genres. In writing, students wrote an expository piece using one or more sources.
In Science, the students learned about basic forms of energy. For Social Studies, students learned about the countries and commonwealths in North America and in the Caribbean.
Please continue to read with your child every night and practice multiplication facts. We appreciate all your help and support at home!
The Third Grade Team
FOURTH GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
We have had a great start to 2024 and are excited about all the learning ahead. It is hard to believe we have settled into the third quarter already. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for students to be in school, all day every day, as much as possible as we head into the push towards Spring state assessments!
Math Unit 12: Decimal Fractions, students are using a variety of representations to help explore decimal fractions. They then apply their knowledge of decimal fractions to write fractions as decimals. Students explore adding and subtracting decimals and solve problems involving money. Please encourage your students to practice their multiplication facts several times a week to build fluency.
Reading this month continues digging deeper into text features, text structures, theme, and central idea along with many other comprehension strategies to help better prepare us for becoming the best reader we can be. Remember fourth graders should be reading for a minimum of 40 minutes every night for homework. Asking your student questions about what they are reading can help build their comprehension skills.
Science in February brings us to the moon, more specifically describing the changes in the observable shape of the moon over the course of about a month. We then move into technology, space research and the economy. Students investigate and report the effects of technology and exploration on the economy and culture of Florida. In Social Studies we will be turning our focus to the Civil War and reconstruction in Florida, and how that affected the industry in Florida.
Leader in Me has us diving deeper into Habit 6: Synergize. Our students have been actively working on and displaying this habit through our “Connect for Success” lessons. We are focusing on valuing other people’s strengths and learning from them. We are looking forward to sharing all that we know about Leader in Me at our first annual Leadership Family Night on February 16th at 4:30. Hope to see you there!
We are so thankful for your continued support at home. We are now more than halfway through the year. We would like to tell our students they are now rising to 5th graders. We are very proud of how hard they are working, but we need to stay focused so we can finish quarter 3 strong.
Thank you,
Your Fourth Grade Team
FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Hello families!
Happy February! We continue to use our 7 Habits to work individually and to synergize with our classmates each day to accomplish our goals.
In ELA, we will be diving more deeply into informational text relating to topics related to art in America. The fifth graders will learn how to summarize texts by identifying the central idea and the relevant details that support it. When we finish that unit, we will explore poetry, and the students will need to explain how figurative language and other poetic elements work together in a poem. In the later part of the quarter, students will be making inferences to support their comprehension about texts related to Earth’s water.
In Math, please continue working on both multi-digit multiplication and division algorithms at home. In class, we will be working on multiplying and dividing with fractions and mixed numbers over the next two units. Remind students to complete their homework daily.
In Science, we are wrapping up our units on the Human Body and Plant and Animal Organ Structures. Ask your child to explain which organs are at work while eating dinner or running around the park. We’ve had an ongoing discussion about which organ is the most vital for survival. Ask what they think and make them support their claim with evidence. Share your own thoughts! We will embark on our unit of the Galaxy, our Solar System, and Planets! Take time in the evening to observe the night sky together!
In Social Studies, students will use primary and secondary sources to understand history and utilize timelines to identify and discuss significant events surrounding the American Revolution.
Please remind your students to read, practice math flash cards, and study science notes each night!
Thanks,
Your Fifth Grade Team

MUSIC NOTES
February is the time for TOOT, WHISTLE, PLUNK, and BOOM!!! Students are discovering the sounds of the four families of the orchestra. Percussive drums are beating, Ukulele strings are strumming, Recorder winds are blowing, and the buzzing lips are bringing in the Brass. There is a lot of sound coming from the Music Room at this time of year. Also, our talented fifth-grade Honors Chorus members are gearing up for the district concert on February 16th. TBE is so proud of these song leaders who are definitely “Finding Their Voice!”
