PTO Announcements
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Dine & Donate last Wednesday. It was great to see everyone dining together or picking up dinner and taking a night off from cooking!
The BSE PTO would like to thank everyone who has volunteered, attended a meeting, provided feedback, or verbalized their support so far this year. It means so much to us to be able to put on fun events that enrich the lives of our BSE students and staff. These events are not possible without your support! We hope this year's holiday season is filled with warmth and the joy of togetherness for you and your loved ones, regardless of the holiday you celebrate.
Warm Regards,
Ashley, Kara, Christina, and Jen

Liberty will accompany our SRO, Officer Sears, whenever she visits our campus.
REMINDER: Breakfast doesn't open until 7:40AM
Our cafeteria does not open until 7:40AM. Please wait at least until then to drop kids off as we do not have any supervision before then.
Please label all student water bottles, outerwear, and lunchboxes!
This will help us reunite lost items to students easily.
Choir lead needed!
BSE students have shown interest in choir and we would love to begin offering this activity next year. We just need a volunteer to take the lead. Call or come into the front office if you are interested.

Ms. Losser's 2nd grade class
In Room 11 in science we studied how to get more birds to visit a birdfeeder. Students studied different birds, what they eat, and how they stand when they eat. Students are hard at work building their own bird feeder prototypes and presenting them to each other. We also had an in class written spelling bee and Theo and Fiona represented Room 11 in the 2nd grade spelling bee competition!
Mark your calendars!
Talent show permission slips are due February 1st!
Auditions will be held the morning of February 7th!
Online Interactions 101
As our children get older, our conversations with them get harder, and particularly about experiences and behaviors on the internet. Here are SEVEN strategies to help those conversations go well.
1. Consider starting the conversation with a highlight of your expertise and your opportunities for growth -- For example, "I remember being a kid, but I've never been a parent of a kid your age before."
2. Use every day experiences as a prompt for conversations -- For example, "Remember how we talked about thinking before we react to situations...?"
3. Your approach is half the battle. If you can be calm and stay calm, this can reduce guarded responses or a full shut-down by your child. They may test the waters to see how you respond. If you stay curious, they may tell you more.
4. Timing and body language are important. Ask for permission to discuss, or schedule a set time to talk. Sit side by side (metaphorically, this puts both of you on one side against "the problem."
5. Listen and respond with open-ended comments, like, "How did you handle it when..." or "What would you do differently next time?"
6. Talk with your children about safe social media practices, including the dangers of engaging in online conversations with strangers and giving out personal information.
7. Recognize that these conversations will be ongoing.
Besides talking with your kids, there are steps you can take to keep your kids safe on the Internet.
1. Get safety tips from professionals, such as Bark. Help your child understand that the precautions you take are to protect them.
2. Make sure they are using their device in a shared space. Check their browsing history and chats regularly. Establish guidelines on loading new apps. Pay close attention to online or video games, social media, and apps for music, pictures, connecting, or sharing.
3. Check privacy settings regularly.
4. Compare etiquette in your home to online norms. "If we don't allow it in the home, then you shouldn't be doing it online."
5. Set up downtime or collect up devices early enough in the evening to ensure good sleep hygiene.
6. Discuss with your child the tactics used by predators.

Student Wellness and Social-Emotional Learning Websites
Blanche Sprentz Elementary and Folsom Cordova Unified School District strive to support family and student wellness, mental health, and school- and home-based social-emotional learning. To ensure the information families need is readily available any time of day, we regularly update both the school-based and district-generated Wellness websites.
BSE's Student Wellness Website provides information on mental health crisis care and support; school- and community-based mental health, behavioral, and grief counseling; social service agencies and programs available to support families in need; and social-emotional learning at home. If you want more information and guidance on a particular subject, please don't hesitate to email Ms. Scarlett (sstoppa@fcusd.org) with your request or questions.
FCUSD's Wellness Resources Website guides families on suicide prevention; school- and community-based mental health; the Community Schools initiative; LGBTQ+ resources; and tips for having difficult conversations with our children.
