Medina High School Staff Member Receives Distinguished Service Award
On Friday, December 3, 2021, Medina High School physics teacher Doug Smith was presented with the Distinguished Service Award; the highest honor bestowed upon a Medina City Schools’ staff member.
Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by a District Committee. Below are a few words that were shared about him by Assistant Superintendent Kris Quallich.
“As a physics teacher at Medina High School, Doug Chapman-Smith takes great pride in perfecting his craft. He strives daily to make connections with his students by relating real-world stories to his lessons. Doug embraces school culture and works hard to promote a positive environment not only in his classroom but throughout the entire building and takes great pride in his workplace. He has been known to be out in the hallways greeting students between periods, making jokes, and has a knack for keeping things light.
Doug has always looked for creative ways to make learning fun. For many years, he coordinated the long-standing “Pumpkin Launch” which brought students in from the middle and elementary schools to watch and begin a life-long interest in science, specifically physics. Doug has also been known to plan exciting field trips for his students most notably a trip, which he personally funded, to see Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, author, and speaker. He had students come in for “flashback Fridays” to listen to and choose 80’s music songs in a tournament-style championship. Doug even took his gaming team to a state championship in his debut run as a head coach.
Doug’s interests and knowledge extend beyond those taught in the classroom. He has been the advisor for the chess club at Medina High School. He has repeatedly taken students in need under his wing lending an ear when needed. He is considered a mentor for students and staff and is a true professional which is evident every day he steps foot into Medina High School to his classroom filled with young, curious minds willing to learn.”
Smith was joined by his family and several of his students to celebrate his accomplishment.
