Back-to-school information
We are excited to welcome you back for the 2022-23 school year!
If you are looking for back-to-school information, visit our website at sumnersd.org/backtoschool for important dates, meals, health and medical forms, safety, transportation, communication to families and more.
The first day of school for grades 1-12 is Tuesday, Sept. 6. The first day of school for kindergarten is Friday, Sept. 9.
Main offices for middle and high schools are now open. Elementary school offices open Aug. 25. To view other key dates for the 2022-23 school year, click here.
School supply lists
Elementary
In order to provide some relief from back-to-school shopping, most elementary schools* are asking families to contribute a $25 donation per child to cover the cost of school supplies. All students should be prepared for school with a backpack, refillable water bottle and lunchbox.
Families can pay the donation by logging into Skyward Family Access. For step-by-step instructions on how to pay for elementary school supplies, click here.
*Liberty Ridge Elementary: School supplies for students attending Liberty Ridge have already been purchased by the school’s PTO. Students will receive their supplies on the first day of school.
Middle School
Click the images below to view each supply list.
High School
Please bring a small binder, paper, and a pen/pencil the first day of school. Specific school supply lists will be given out for each class by teachers during the first days of school. Students in grades 10-12 should bring their Chromebooks.
Back-to-School Resource Fairs
Our first Back-to-School Resource Fairs were a huge success! On Aug. 16 at Daffodil Valley Elementary, we distributed about 460 backpacks to 180 families. On Aug. 19 at Lakeridge Middle School, we distributed about 350 backpacks to 120 families.
If you missed our first two resource fairs, we have two more scheduled for next week. Families of students attending schools in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District in need of school supplies can pick up backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, binders, and more at these upcoming grab-and-go events:
- August 23 | 1- 3 pm | Liberty Ridge Elementary | 12202 209th Ave Ct E. Bonney Lake
- August 25 | 3 - 7 pm | Sumner-Bonney Lake Family Center | 1508 Willow St. Sumner
For more information: Sumner-Bonney Lake Family Center: (253) 891-6150. These events would not be possible without our generous donors, listed here: sumnersd.org/btsresourcefair.
Back-to-school events
SBLSD schools are hosting various back-to-school events for new and returning students:
Changes to meal prices for the 2022-23 school year
This school year, there are some important changes to meal prices. A national school meal waiver that provided free meals for all students due to the pandemic expired over the summer. This means that meals are no longer free for everyone.
We encourage families who may be eligible to apply for free meals. Applications can be found at sumnersd.org/meals. Applications are confidential. Families who qualify for free and reduced-price meals may also be eligible for waived or reduced fees to participate in extracurricular school programs, such as sports fees, club fees, field trips, ASB event tickets, and more. To receive these benefits, families can fill out a Consent to Share Eligibility form here.
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are also eligible for discounted internet bills through the Affordable Connectivity Program.
Families may want to check their student meal account balances before school starts. See below for meal prices for the 2022-23 school year:
Registering for athletics this school year
This year, the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service, for athletic registration.
FinalForms allows families to complete and sign athletic participation forms for students and saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice. Families will be required to sign their forms once per year and after any update. It’s vital that you keep your student-athlete’s information up to date in the system at all times.
View the Parent Playbook to learn how to get started: English | Spanish.
High school and middle school athletic registration is now open. Register at https://sumner-wa.finalforms.com.
Welcoming incoming freshmen to Bonney Lake and Sumner high schools
Bonney Lake and Sumner high schools hosted Freshmen Ramp Up! events this week to welcome the Class of 2026.
Around 200 incoming freshmen to both schools had the opportunity to tour their campus, meet staff and fellow students, get early access to their schedule and learn pro-tips to make the most of their high school experience.
We can’t wait to have you back in September!
Sunset Stadium: Upgrades, new hours
Over the summer, Sunset Stadium received several upgrades
- Lighting: Replacement lighting included all pole lights in the stadium and on the soccer/baseball field. The LED lighting is more energy efficient and produces less light spillage with direct downward light onto the field.
- Turf: The new turf has an e-layer, a bonded rubber shock pad placed between the ground and the turf for increased player safety.
- Areas of the stadium also received a refresh with pressure washing and painting.
Stadium open from dawn to dusk
Due to nighttime misuse of Sunset Stadium that has resulted in safety issues, the facility will only be open from dawn to dusk effective immediately. We invite the community to continue to use the stadium, which will remain open for recreational use during daylight hours. Organizations with reserved space will receive access during their requested times.
As the safety of our schools and facilities extend beyond the school year and school day, we strive to maintain a clean, safe and secure space for everyone to enjoy.
