Facilitators' Findings
Thank you to those who participated in our Coffee with the Design Facilitators on Friday, 2/16. During the session, we engaged in a design sprint, focusing on prioritizing existing or additional school programs and specific supports to ensure our students' future success. Participants contributed a myriad of ideas, engaging in lively and active discussions. We categorized, ranked, and further discussed themes and topics, providing valuable insights into potential district priorities. Our site focused on social-emotional health, school safety, global languages, and after-school care opportunities. You can take a look the board in the photo below. This sprint served as an excellent segue for each participant to complete our LCAP survey.
Speaking of which, thank you to the many D39C families who participated in the PUSD LCAP survey. The LCAP (or Local Control and Accountability Plan) is a California state initiative designed to guide school districts in allocating resources to meet the unique needs of their students. It requires districts to involve parents, educators, and community members in the decision-making process to address student performance and prioritize funding for targeted programs. The LCAP aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and student outcomes by aligning budgetary decisions with specific goals and actions to support educational equity and success.
In short, it guides the good work we do.
Enjoy the winter recess. We will see you back at school on 2/26/23. Our next Designers' Reminders will be available on the afternoon of March 3rd.

Profiles in Equity: Claudette Colvin
Claudette Colvin is a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement, recognized for her courageous act of resistance against racial segregation on public buses in Montgomery, Alabama. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, challenging the unjust segregation laws that permeated the Southern United States. Her defiance occurred nine months before Rosa Parks, often more widely acknowledged, took a similar stand. Colvin's bold actions led to her arrest, but her case became an important legal challenge to segregation.
Despite her significant contribution to the civil rights cause, Claudette Colvin's story has often been overshadowed by other prominent figures. Nonetheless, her bravery laid the groundwork for subsequent legal battles that eventually culminated in the Supreme Court's ruling in Browder v. Gayle, which declared Montgomery's bus segregation unconstitutional. Claudette Colvin's role in the early stages of the civil rights movement stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of individuals who, even in their youth, played crucial roles in dismantling systemic racial injustice.
AVID Tip of the Week
The AVID Tip of the Week is to use the study buddy system.
Implementing a buddy system for studying is a highly effective strategy that can enhance learning outcomes and foster a supportive academic environment. In this system, students pair up with a study partner to collaborate on various aspects of their coursework. One of the key advantages is that it promotes accountability, as each student is responsible for their partner's progress. This mutual accountability encourages regular attendance at study sessions, prompt completion of assignments, and active participation in group discussions. Additionally, the buddy system facilitates a diverse exchange of ideas and perspectives, allowing students to benefit from different learning approaches and problem-solving strategies.
Beyond accountability, the buddy system creates a sense of camaraderie and emotional support. Studying can often be challenging, and having a study partner provides a built-in support system. Students can share insights, clarify doubts, and offer encouragement during stressful periods. This emotional support not only contributes to a positive learning experience but also helps alleviate stress and anxiety associated with academic challenges. The buddy system, when properly implemented, nurtures a collaborative learning environment where students feel motivated to achieve their academic goals while building strong, supportive relationships with their peers.

Lofty Ideas
Can you spot the lie? Many presidents have kept pets at the White House. Thomas Jefferson had a pet duck named Dick. Theodore Roosevelt had a pet badger named Josiah. Herbert Hoover had a pet possum named Billy. Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon named Rebecca. (source: Truth or Lie Presidents, 2019)
This week, designers discussed what qualities make a good leader, the responsibilities of our president, and learned some little known facts about former U.S. presidents. They also prepared for our upcoming break by selecting “just right” books to read during our time away from school.
Lie - Thomas Jefferson had several pet birds. But Dick was not a duck. He was a mockingbird.

Yes, You Have Seen This Before
Attendance and OCIS Contracts: If you have a student who will not be in class for 5-14 days, please notify the office so we can have the parents fill out an OCIS contract for their child. The forms will have to be completed and signed by parents 5-10 days in advance of the absence. Click here for a link to the OCIS Contract.
Parents are required to give 5 days notice for absences up to 5 days, 10 days notice for absences more than 5 days.
Prepping work for students who are absent is an incredible amount of work for our teaching staff and we ask that you give your child’s teacher as much advance notice as possible beyond the above guidelines.
We do not write contracts beyond 14 days. If you plan to be away for 15 or more days please contact the Welcome Center for the necessary procedures.
Would you like to become a part of the Design39Campus Team? Do you like to be outside and work with children? If so, we are looking for a few quality Motion Managers to help support our designers during body breaks and lunch during the middle of the day. Possible times are 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. or 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. If interested, please apply through Poway Unified School District at the this link.
Attendance: To report your child's absence or early checkout, please email the attendance office at d39cattendance@powayusd.com before 10:00 am on the day of the absence. Please include your child's name, homeroom/grade, dates of absence, and reason for absence. We kindly ask that you avoid checking out your student during the lunch period from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Please refer to the attendance section of our Design39Campus website for protocols regarding reporting student absences and requesting early release for your student.'
California Education Code 48205 states that a student may be excused legally from school when the absence is due to:
- Personal illness or injury
- Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health office
- Medical, dental, or chiropractic services
- Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family
- Justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent and approved by the principal or designated representative
- For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election
- Exclusion for failure to present evidence of immunization
- Exclusion from school because student is either the carrier of a contagious disease or not immunized for a contagious disease
Communication with your Designer: If there is a need to communicate with your child during the school day, please send a message to your child’s LED or the Welcome Center. Please refrain from communicating with them directly through text messages or phone calls as it disrupts their learning.
Personal Items: For equity reasons, we are asking that students keep their personal playground equipment at home or in their backpack. Our wonderful Collaborative supplies us with enough funding to ensure that there is enough equipment during recess and lunch.
The D39C Collaborative
The D39C Collaborative is a 100% volunteer-run foundation designed to be responsive to the needs of students, parents, and learning experience designers of Design39Campus. Their mission is to expand and enhance the educational experience of every student attending Design39Campus.

Even though meals are free, families are still highly encouraged to complete the application for free and reduced-price meal eligibility. School site funding depends in part on the number of students eligible for free/reduced-price meals. Families that qualify for free/reduced-price meals may qualify for other benefits, as well. The meal application is available online at MySchoolApps.com.
Printer-friendly PDF menus are available on the PUSD Food and Nutrition webpage. At the top of the page, click or hover over School Menus + and then Printable PDF Menus.
