Hello, Jackson County 4-H Families!

With all declaration and tagging days behind us, we're in that final stretch before fair descends! Remember, the Spring Fair and Shooting Sports Fair registration deadline is Wednesday, May 3 and the Summer Fair and contests registrations will within a month or so! Make sure to sign up on time and correctly! Start now--that way, if there are any questions or issues, you'll have time to call Steven at 541-930-8412 before the deadline.

We are still looking for adults to help out at Camp Myrtlewood! Adult chaperones at camp will receive a discount on their child' camp fees. Camp registration is still open and there are still spaces left! Register at this link (and contact the office for the 4-H discount code--$40 off the cost of camp!).

Finally, we're still looking for adult volunteers and youth volunteers to help set up, host, lead activities in, and tear down the static exhibit hall at fair this year! Are you a parent of kids who do static projects? Come join the fun! Reach out to Steven at 541-930-8412 for more information! Our next meeting is this Wednesday at 6PM at Extension, so feel free to just show up!

Cheri Biskeborn has been a 4-H volunteer for many years: she was a foods superintendent for decades and has recently stepped it up as a sewing leader and taught a few STEP class on sewing to young people! Thank you so much, Cheri, for all of your support for the youth of Jackson County!

The themes for 2023 are:

Region of Celebration: The Caribbean!

The Caribbean states (as recognized by the United Nations) include Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago

We hope that youth will take a moment and select a country within this region to focus in on and learn more about their people and culture.

Fashion Revue Challenge Theme:

a garment or outfit inspired by your favorite movie. Create a garment, costume, or outfit that is straight out of the movies! Choose a movie (4-H appropriate = G or PG) and use your research talents, creativity, and imagination to produce your fashion masterpiece. If the movie is rated older than G or PG, please contact your county faculty/staff for approval.

Flower Arrangements Theme (for the static contest): Folklore, Fables, and Fairytales

By the way, about that new Cupcake Wars Contest--we need volunteers to help make it run! Reach out to the office with any questions or comments!

April 29th-30th || $5 for ASG members or youth under 18, $10 for non-ASG members || Basic Sewing experience required--participants should know how to use their sewing machines || 3 sessions, starting at 8:30am (doors open at 8AM). Bring your own lunch! || Register ahead of time by sending your filled-out form (the pdf below) to Peggy Groves at oldbezoar@charter.net--classes are filled on a first come, first served basis!

If your child doesn't have basic sewing experience, basic sewing will be taught by Cheri Biskeborn for youth who are new to sewing during the first session starting 8:30am! This part is free of charge and they can join classes in the B and C sections after learning the basics with Cheri!

Details: We will have a guest speaker about poultry nutrition, and we will be going over important details regarding the poultry fair. We will let poultry youth know what they will need to bring to the fair, new auction rules, the general schedule, activities, and answer any questions.

A very important piece of exhibiting a market animal at fair is taking buyers letters to businesses. Ravassipour Orthodontics is so excited to be hosting a night on how to market your 4-H project! All 4-H/FFA members are invited. We are welcoming two generous supporters of the fair to bring input from their personal perspective. There will be pizza!

On May 22nd all shooting sports kids from Joesphine and Jackson County are invited to attend an introduction to Guardians 4 Heath. We will be meeting at the Josephine County extension office located at 215 Ringuette Street in Grants Pass. We will start at 6:30 pm. This meeting will be approximately 90 minutes, and dinner will be provided. This should be fun and a nice social event for the kids.

The Guardians 4 Heath pilot program is providing bystander intervention to 4-H Shooting Sports Youth. Brown University is providing the content for this program.

We will do an introduction to the program, answer questions and get enroll in the data collection portion of the program, then take the first survey. Brown University is compensating folks for taking the survey. Youth and one parent can opt into this well controlled, IRB approved, anonymous pilot program. The more kids we can get involved, the better.

The Jackson County 4-H program wants to introduce to you the Oregon Grown Curriculum and activity kits! The lessons included are about farming and tools, the tops and bottoms of different plants, diary, grain, propagation, regeneration and byproducts, and where certain products come from. Each kit has a both a pre-planned activity and one included by the 4-H program.

The kits include most of the materials for every activity! They are available at the OSU Extension Office to check out for $1--call Cristy (541-776-7371), our 4-H office professional, for more information!

All 4-H Clubs in Jackson County need to submit their "Chartering a 4-H Club in Oregon" form to Extension ASAP. The state is having every club re-charter this 4-H year. If you have already sent Steven (steven.mcintyre@oregonstate.edu) or the extension office a charter this 4-H year (since September), no need to send another!

This Thursday, we’re launching the National Index study. This study is great opportunity for our state to understand how 4-H youth are thriving (using the Thriving Model and Common Measures instruments). Participation in the study is targeted to 13–18-year-olds who have been in 4-H more than one year. We encourage all 4-H members to take the survey. Refer to this page for more information!

Spring Classic (April 28-30 in Redmond, OR) is labor intensive and Candi is requesting folks to help out! If interested, you can go here and sign up: https://signup.com/go/zsZSrKq There is also a button on the website that will send them to the sign up document.

May 8th at Oregon State Meats Lab, Scope of Contest includes:

• 30 Retail Identification (species, primal, retail)
• 3-5 Carcass Yield and Quality Grade
• 6 placing classes
• Team Questions

4-H teams have been to participate in the FFA Meat judging contest. I want to encourage everyone with interest to let Candi know - turn around for planning is VERY short and they need to know if we have interested parties coming. You can also double judge, 4-H and FFA if you like. If we have some 4-Hers and/or teams attend, there can be a National competition opportunity attached for Seniors.

This event is for intermediates and seniors only. Please take advantage... we may not raise livestock for life, but it's likely we'll purchase meat along the way.

The contest is Monday, May 8th in Corvallis, on campus at the meat lab. Candi needs to know ASAP if there is interest and we'll get folks registered by April 27. Sorry for the short notice. Email Candi if interested ASAP. candi.bothum@oregonstate.edu

What is the Virtual Rainbows Summit? An annual summit for LGBTQ+ youth, families, professionals, and allies, providing resources and networking opportunities to benefit the physical, mental, emotional, and social health and wellness of all members of the LGBTQ+ community.

When will the conference be? April 27-29, with sessions ranging from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm PST every day. Sessions will be recorded, but interactive activities are only available live.

Who will be speaking? We have upwards of altogether 20 professionals, community members, families, and youth. The summit is meant to give its audience a perspective of the LGBTQ+ community from various angles and intersections in identity.

Why should you attend? Whether you are a professional looking to support LGBTQ+ youth, an LGBTQ+ community member yourself (any age), or a family/friend of someone who is LGBTQ+, we recommend attending to improve your understanding of this community and improve your knowledge of this amazing community.

Registration is 100% free and available to all individuals!

The Lake County Horse Leaders are accepting entries for the Shaggy Days Playday at the Lake County Fairgrounds on May 6th. This is an OPEN playday for all community members of all ages—Yep, that means you, too Mom and Dad!

Come join us for some fun and games on your shaggy equine! Prizes awarded through 4th place for each class. Discounted registration fee for pre-entry and for families.
