Autumn Term - 2nd November 2023
Message from the Executive Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
I hope you all had a great half term break and were able to recharge your batteries before the school restarts again. On Friday 20th October, I was privileged to be a judge, alongside two of our governors for the final of the school poetry competition, the finalists were all fantastic; performing with confidence and poise and the audience were hugely supportive of them. Please see the item below with the details.
We will be holding our annual remembrance assembly in school but prior to that we will be selling poppies. Many thanks to Seb's (6W) nanny who has again made some beautiful handmade poppies. These are available to buy for £2 direct from the office. Other poppies will be brought round to the classrooms by the school council throughout the week. School staff will also attend the Hampton Remembrance Parade on Sunday 12th November and would like two children to represent HJS. Children will need to be at the methodist church at 11.55 to be part of the parade. If you wish your child to take part please contact the admin team for the full details.
We have also chosen our worthy winners for the praise postcard competition, please see below and well done to all those who entered. I'm sure you will enjoy receiving one of these beautiful cards through the post. Congratulations to Olivia & River (6GB), Saanvi (5A) & Jai (3D).
I wanted to say a big thank you to those families who contributed so generously to our harvest assembly, the donations were collected by the local food bank and hygiene bank who have sent in a thank you card (see below).
Don't forget to visit the book fair this week, it's in the Rose Hall this evening and on Friday too. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at parent consultation next week, please ensure you have booked your appointment.
Finally, don't forget to purchase your tickets for our annual Firework event next Friday 10th November. Full details can be found at the bottom of The Buzz and tickets can be purchased via the button below.

HJS Poetry Competition and Praise Postcard Winners
The poetry competition has been a great success this year with all children engaging and writing poetry based on the theme 'refuge'. All children went through several rounds and finally on Friday 20th October the finals took place and what a fantastic final it was! All finalists performed brilliantly with such confidence and as an audience we were so impressed with their own interpretation of the theme. A huge congratulations to Sofia and Rosie who won the competition and a huge thank you to our judging panel, Ms Lockey, Polly and Courtney, for taking the responsibility to select a winner. Well done Hampton Junior School for making the poetry competition so special this year.

Message from the Office
Football After School Club
Reminder that if your child attends football after school they may get changed at lunchtime but only if they are changing into their HJS PE kit. If your child wishes to wear any other kit which is not HJS this must be done at the end of the school day.
Reporting sickness or diarrhoea
If your child has sickness or diarrhoea the office will automatically mark your child out for 48 hours and there will be no need to call the office on day 2. However, if your child is still unwell and unable to return to school on day 3 we would ask that you do call the office and notify them of this further absence.
Late Pick Up/Change in Collection
Whilst we understand changes are inevitable please can you email the office by 2pm to ensure this message is passed on to the teacher in good time. Any emails received after this time may not be passed to the class teacher in time for dismissal.
Supporting your children with reading
Thank you to all those who attended our Reading Workshop for Parents before half term. If you were unable to make it, or wish for a copy of the powerpoint and document referred to in the workshop, they can be found on the English and Phonics page of our website or by clicking the below link.
Mrs Gregory and Miss Smith
At Hampton Junior School, we believe that Geography is vital to child’s understanding of the world they live in as well as a concrete way to explore and discover it. Through an enquiry-lead approach, children develop their locational knowledge, use and refine maps and skills and enjoy investigative opportunities. Each year, children will have multiple chances to engage in fieldwork where they can learn about the world around us from outside the classroom. These opportunities can range from visits to the river, to observations in our own garden, to trips to the Cornish coast!
Throughout their time at HJS, all children will continually build on and recap their previous knowledge to deepen their understanding of the connections between physical and human geography. Embedded in our curriculum is the consistent use of high-quality resources (such as atlases, globes, maps as well as some exciting and innovative computer programs) to ensure every child has the opportunity to understand and be successful. All of this, combined with our strong focus on geographical vocabulary, means Geography is an exciting and hands-on subject that has been carefully planned with every child in mind.
Year 5 News
5C enjoyed creating portraits of a character from their English text, Coraline.
Year 6 News
6W enjoyed being part of a Victorian Classroom and experiencing what life would be like for Victorian Children. We took part in writing, arithmetic, ‘object’ lessons and drill and found out about some of the objects used as punishments such as the backboard, dunces cap, finger stocks and cane!
6GB News
6GB had a great Victorian Day. Thanks to the parents for all the support with the costumes! We also enjoyed listening to Ali about discussing his family’s history and we loved the pocket watch!
Well done to Miss Bell for all her hard work with the printing! 6GB have produced some wonderful prints in the style.
Games Club
Ellis from 6W is going to be starting a games club which will run on a Monday and Tuesday lunchtime in 6W. If you have any new or pre-loved games (card games or board games but no missing pieces please) or you would like to donate a game then please could you drop them off at the office and say that they are for games club.
