Clubs and Tutoring and Conferences, Oh My! Clubs and tutoring are pretty much in full swing here at Ridgeway! I had a few questions come up throughout the week, so wanted to send out a little clarity and the ‘why’ behind some of our procedures/policies for clubs and tutoring.
Our policy at Ridgeway is that tutoring trumps clubs. So, if you have signed up for tutoring, but also signed your child up for a club on one or both of those same days, the expectation is that you would forgo the club and attend tutoring both days. I realize this can present a hard decision and often ones that students may not prefer. Our reasoning for this is that we have limited tutoring spots. It is free, high quality tutoring with a classroom teacher, so there is a lot of interest in participating. If we give a spot to a student who is going to miss half of the sessions, that takes the opportunity away from a student who could come to every session. It is also hard for tutors to be prepared and adequately plan when their group size will change depending on the day. Of course sickness and emergencies happen, but if you agree to a tutoring spot please do your best to have your child attend as consistently as possible.
There are many amazing club opportunities here at Ridgeway. If your child is participating in a club, please know that the following policies will be in place in order to ensure safety and respect of time.
Late pickup → If you are more than 5 minutes late to pick up from a club twice, your child won’t be able to continue participating in any clubs. Several of our teachers have second jobs, are in advanced degree programs, have childcare pick up and other obligations in the evenings that are very important and we don’t want to infringe on that time.
Behavior → If your child has a behavior incident during clubs, the club sponsor will inform you of what happened. If a second behavior incident occurs, your student will no longer be able to participate in clubs. There are certain circumstances (like intentionally injuring another person) that may not get a second chance and may warrant losing clubs immediately. While administrators are still in the building during clubs many days, we often have meetings, professional development, and other obligations that prohibit us from being on call for behavior. We also don’t have a nurse in the building for the duration of clubs. If unsafe behavior is happening, we won’t be able to participate in clubs.
Club sponsors will be sharing behavior expectations with students, but we would appreciate you all having this discussion with your student as well.
These are exciting learning opportunities for our students and we appreciate your support!
Reminders:
Conferences are coming up! In next week’s RAP you will find a live link to a sign up genius where you will be able to pick a conference time for each of your children. Be on the lookout for that next Friday!
Each class will have a fall party on October 31st, but just a reminder that we will not wear costumes at school.

Art with Mrs. Lillig
Hello everyone! Well, the Art Room has certainly been busy! I’ve SO enjoyed my first couple of months as Ridgeway’s newest Art Teacher. It’s been fun learning what our students know and finding creative ways to grow their creativity even more!
Unit A has been exploring different materials: tempera, watercolors, oil pastels, markers, construction paper, glue, and scissors. We just finished an exploration of finding shapes in the world around us, especially in landscapes. We even created our own “Shapescapes” using only cut shapes!
Unit B has also been reviewing different art materials. We’ve been discussing landscapes, looking for foreground, midground, and background. We’ve also discussed art terms like value, tint, and shade. To practice our knowledge, we created “Value Landscapes”, creating tints to represent each area, and then populating it with trees full of pattern.
Unit C has had QUITE a start to the year! They have been working in small groups brainstorming, planning, blueprinting, and creating BIG THINGS! This has proven to be an incredible lesson in perseverance, flexibility, and teamwork. I am super proud of all the Teams and their creations.
Keep an eye out for an invitation to check out your student’s artwork on Artsonia!
Creatively yours,
Mrs. Lillig

Hello Ridgeway Families,
Classes are going well, and we now have a solid foundation in our routine. The kids bring their energy and excitement to class every day.
Learning Objectives:
- We have reviewed our locomotor skills and jumping rope for several weeks. The jump rope consists of a long jump rope working as a team and individual jump rope. All the students have improved in this area and some are even working on this at recess.
- We are currently working on catching and throwing, which will last until the beginning of November. We are learning underhand tosses, overhand throws, and lob throws. We are catching the ball in a “basket” style, two-handed and one-handed. The kids are learning to catch and throw off a wall, in the air, with a partner, and while moving. We have only used a foam soft ball to practice, but next week we will use all types of balls to experience different objects (footballs, tennis balls, softballs, soft baseballs, wiffle balls, and yarn balls).
I am always excited to see them have fun and learn new skills.
Please remember to have your kids wear athletic shoes so they can run and move.
Sincerely,
Coach Mason
