School building entrances required to be locked
I hope that all of you are settling into the new year with your students. We have had a great start to the school year in our district and are excited about a new year of learning! We find ourselves fortunate to work in a district and community that supports education at a very high level.
As you have been made aware by your principal, a new state law went into effect on July 1 regarding building access, specifically exterior doors. While safety of students and staff has always been the highest priority in our district, we need to provide extra emphasis this year on ensuring that all exterior doors remain locked and closed at all times (other than during controlled times such as arrivals, dismissals, and class changes). Doors that are left propped open or unlocked will result in substantial fines from state officials who are frequently checking school facilities across the state. For example, the third time an exterior door is found to be unlocked or open and not monitored by a staff member there is a fine of 2% of the annual base funding for that school. For example, $2% of the base would be $335,454 at Science Hill High School and for a school the size of North Side, 2% of the base would be $42,670.
Additionally, all interior doors should remain locked at all times following guidance from your building administration. There should be rare circumstances where magnets may be used but follow your principal’s guidance in these situations.
Attached is the new state law for your review pertaining to this issue.
Thank you again for your attention to this matter and for all you have done to ensure a successful start to our school year.
Sincerely,
Steve Barnett

STOPit empowers students to stand up for themselves and others while giving our schools the insight we need to keep students safe. Students can download the App from the Apple Store or Google play store on their mobile device and then search for their Johnson City School. While the reports are anonymous, there will be severe consequences for anyone who is found to have made a false report.
