SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE
Dear Natick Public School Students, Families and Staff,
One of the highlights of the fall, the final back to school night of all our schools took place this week at the high school. We were thrilled to host so many families at our schools for this annual school community event. I thank the staff, faculty and administration for their careful preparations and thoughtful presentations! We thank you for taking the time to attend!
As this week of classes began many of us were feeling adjusted to the school year’s new routines, classes, and activities and ready to enjoy a cooler and drier fall.
Tragically, this week bears more news of terrible loss of life in the neighboring state of Maine. The occurrence of multiple casualties in Lewiston caused by a lone individual who remains at large is hugely unsettling. Such news may cause increased anxiety among students or adults. Please reach out to your principals, counselors or other trusted adults if you or someone you know is in need of counseling support. Below is a reference list of available resources.
SIncerely,
Bella Wong

Superintendent Search Update
Dear Natick Public Schools Community,
The School Committee, along with our consultants at NESDEC, would like to update you on the process of the search for our new permanent superintendent. Please take the time to read about the latest developments in this process below:
The School Committee approved (and NESDEC began dissemination of) the invitation letter for candidates to submit their applications by December 7, 2023. This deadline puts us on a timeline to select our superintendent by the end of January/early February.
We are now working on a process to gather information from various community stakeholders in order to develop a candidate profile that will guide the selection of the superintendent. We will collect feedback through a community-wide survey (coming soon) and a series of focus groups. At its October 2nd meeting, the School Committee voted to conduct the following set of focus groups in the coming weeks:
Building administrators and Central Office staff
Students
Teachers/School staff (two focus groups)
Parents/Caregivers: (two focus groups—one in person in the morning, one virtual in the evening)
Community members
Town leaders (both professionals and volunteers)
SAVE THE DATE: FOCUS GROUPS
Parents/Caregivers - Nov. 9 at the Community-Senior Center, 9 a.m.
Community - Nov. 9 at the Town Hall School Committee room, 5:30 p.m.
Parents/Caregivers - Nov. 13 on Zoom ONLY, 7 p.m.
(More information —including a virtual meeting link—will be announced soon.)
The School Committee voted on which members of its Committee will serve on the Screening Committee. Matt Brand (Chair of the Screening Committee) and Catherine Brunell were elected. The members of the screening committee will also include Central Office staff person, a principal, three members of the Education Association of Natick, a student, three parents, the town administrator, and a community member-at-large.
The School Committee will be reaching out to stakeholder groups to identify who may be interested in serving on the Screening Committee.
As always, if you have any questions or comments about the process, please feel free to reach out to us at schoolcommittee@natickps.org.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices
This is a friendly reminder that each school handbook and staff handbook has outlined restrictions on the use of cell phones and other electronic devices in the Natick Public Schools. It is the expectation of the Natick Public Schools that all students and staff will comply with these guidelines. Non-adherence to the guidelines will be subject to consequences as outlined in the student and/or staff handbooks. Please note that these guidelines include the prohibition of taking photos or videos in classrooms with cell phones or other electronic devices, which are not authorized or not part of an educator's professional responsibility.
STUDENTS
High School: Cell phones and personal electronic devices, other than a student’s assigned laptop, must be turned off and must not be visible in the classroom during the class periods. The same devices must be turned off and not visible in all bathrooms during the school day. Cell phones may be used in the dining hall, courtyard, library, and hallways. Electronic devices necessary for a specific educational purpose and/or individual student need may be used in class with the approval of the supervising teacher/staff member.
Elementary and Middle Schools: All electronic devices and components must be turned off and not visible during the school day. Electronic devices necessary for a specific educational purpose and/or individual student need may be used in class with the approval of the supervising teacher/staff member.
STAFF MEMBERS
Most employees will have a cell phone that they use for personal communications and that is expected, since it is how we stay connected to our families and friends. Such use during the school day is acceptable as long as it does not interfere with your professional responsibilities. Use of a cell phone by an employee is permitted only during non-instructional time, unless previously approved by the school principal.

News from METCO
On Thursday, October 26, educators across the nation were invited to a webinar entitled "Teach the Legacy of America's Efforts to Integrate Public Schools" held by PBS LearningMedia/WGBH in collaboration with the National Council for the Social Studies. As part of this event, "The Busing Battleground", a program recently produced by AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, was shown. Any viewer is welcome to watch the streamed version of "The Busing Battleground" and explore the roles that everyday citizens, political leaders, and the courts have played in the struggle to integrate public schools throughout the United States, beginning with the California public schools in 1946 and ending with the Boston Public Schools in 1988."
Students who participate in the METCO program are thriving from the elementary to high school grade levels. Natick Public Schools became a partner METCO district in 1969. Learn more about the history of METCO here.
