Dear Friends
February 19, 2021
District to participate in UW COVID-19 study
The Snohomish School District is partnering with the University of Washington (UW) in its research project to gain insights into the transmission of COVID-19 in classrooms. The project provides free COVID-19 testing for in-person learning students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade, as well as current, onsite staff working with special education and kindergarten through 6th grade students. This program is voluntary and only those families and staff who want to participate are encouraged to do so. It is slated to begin Monday, February 22, and will continue through the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
“We are thrilled to be a part of this testing partnership with the University of Washington,” said Kent Kultgen, Superintendent of the Snohomish School District. “This project allows our students and staff participating in in-person learning to be routinely tested for COVID-19. This project gives our students, staff and their families peace of mind by providing timely results. In addition, this rapid personal testing model will enable our health partners to quickly contact trace those who have had contact with those who test positive.”
The UW’s Dr. Helen Chu said the goal is to gain knowledge about how the virus may be transmitted in schools, especially by asymptomatic children. The study will be conducted between February and June, through regular symptom monitoring and weekly volunteer testing of children and school staff.
“I am confident that with the design of this study and the participants, we will learn a great deal about the transmission of the virus,” Chu said. “This information will be invaluable to policy makers and administrators of health and education systems on the state and local levels, as they make decisions on when and how students may return to in-classroom instruction.”
The study is being conducted by the Seattle Flu Study group, which includes faculty and staff from the Brotman Baty Institute; UW Medicine and the Department of Genome Sciences; Seattle Children’s Hospital; and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Dr. Helen Chu to present at upcoming school board meeting
Dr. Helen Chu
Snohomish School Board Presentation
Wednesday, February 24 at 6 p.m.
Snohomish School District is excited to be partnering with the University of Washington (UW) under the direction of Dr. Helen Chu, to conduct COVID-19 testing for our staff and students (see info in article above). This program will provide essential data for better understanding of COVID-19 and assist the Snohomish School District in providing a safe learning environment.
Dr. Helen Chu is the director and a principal investigator of the Seattle Flu Study (SFS), as well as Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Global Health, and Epidemiology at UW and an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. In February 2020, SFS under the direction of Dr. Chu identified the first COVID-19 community transmission in the United States. That work led to the creation of the Seattle Coronavirus Assessment Network (SCAN).
In December 2020, Dr. Chu received the Researcher of the Year Award for her work tracking the COVID-19 outbreak through the Seattle Flu Study. The Researcher of the Year Award is one of the Puget Sound Business Journal's Health Care Leadership Awards, which recognize innovative Puget Sound healthcare leaders whose work has had a lasting impact on the region.
Dr. Chu will be presenting to the Snohomish School Board of Directors at their regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend as Dr. Chu discusses the Snohomish School District and UW partnership.

Join us in celebrating Black History Month
President Gerald R. Ford asked Americans in 1976 to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That was when Black History Month officially began, and the month of February has been dedicated as Black History Month every year since then. Our district celebrates Black History Month and honor the achievements and cultural contributions of Black Americans that allow our society to transcend the bounds of racism.
Online kindergarten registration begins March 15

Roadmap to Learning reminders
- Schedules - The return to in-person instruction is a very personal decision for our students and their families. And while many have made the decision to return to in-person learning, others have not. Instruction through our district’s 100% remote offering continues with our team of educators and staff who support these students and their families through our online platforms. Students who have chosen to continue with remote instruction, will remain under the current remote schedule. We remain steadfast in our dedication and commitment to educate all students whether they be at home or in our school classrooms. In-person and remote student schedules are available at www.sno.wednet.edu/reopening/schedules.
- Attestation - Students receiving in-person instruction should please remember to complete their online attestation and daily symptom check before arriving on campus each day (emails will be sent to student families about 5:15 a.m. and 7 a.m.). Attestation information is available at www.sno.wednet.edu/reopening/attestation.
- Bus routes and schedules - Please be sure to check our transportation information as some of our routes and schedules were recently updated to reflect additional student riders. Bus route and schedule information is available at www.sno.wednet.edu/reopening/transportation.
