K-4 Social Studies at Manheim Central School District
Social Studies lends itself to dynamic, personal and interdisciplinary discussions in the classroom.
As children grow, they develop the capacity to think outside of themselves. Our Social Studies curriculum expands outward to support that development. We begin by celebrating each other, our families and our school community. Students branch out to learn about the community of Manheim and the agricultural landscape and industry of Lancaster County. Before heading to Middle School, students learn about citizenship, government and civics, economics, geography and the Early Settlers in U.S. History, specifically Pennsylvania.
Learners also have the opportunity to work with volunteers in our community through Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement is the nation's largest organization dedicated to giving learners the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures, and make smart academic and economic choices.
Highlights include:
- Field Trips to the Manheim Community Farm Show in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades
- Field Trip to the Hershey Museum in Second Grade to learn about Milton S. Hershey and his philanthropic work
- Field Trip to a working dairy farm in Third Grade to learn about Lancaster's rich agricultural history and community
- Field Trips to the Capitol Building and Whitaker Center in Fourth Grade
