Who Turned Up the Heat? A Worker's Analysis
Presented by Kit Marlowe
Protecting workers from heat stress was part of Kit Marlowe’s profession. He worked hard at that part because heat causes many worker deaths. On Labor Sunday, Kit will share practical and political steps that control excess heat in your life.
Kit will share advice about keeping family members, workers, cars, houses, neighborhoods, and the world cool. Where individual efforts cannot control the risk, Kit will share his perceptions about what society should do, and who blocks those protective steps.
BIO: Kit Marlowe is a chemist and engineer who has been have been involved in
Peace and Justice issues for more than fifty years. He is a member of both
the Teamsters Union and the American Federation of Government Employees. He
is also the secretary of the Unitarian Universalists for Just Economic
PLEASE NOTE: This service will be in person at UUCSJS and streamed live on our Facebook page. A recording will be available later in the day on our YouTube Channel.
*Masks are currently optional at UUCSJS.
Sept. 10th: Water Communion Ceremony
Presented by Minister Dana Moore
This sermon invites us to journey through water. Water as story, water as an earth element, and water as a sustaining shared resource that unites us all. Aligns with Principles: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Sept. 17th: "The Great Turning and Allies In Caring's Role in Creating Life-Sustaining Communities
If you look for it, you can find evidence that our civilization is being reinvented all around us. Previously accepted approaches to healthcare, business, education, agriculture, transport, communication, psychology, economics, and so many other areas are being questioned and transformed. This is the second strand of the Great Turning, and it involves a rethinking of the way we do things, as well as a creative redesign of the structures and systems that make up our society.
Members of Allies In Caring will share the different ways this non profit organization providing behavioral health services is participating in these emerging strands of a life-sustaining culture in South Jersey.
Sept. 24th: Loss, Grief, and Healing
Presented by Cynthia Grzywinski
Many if not most of us have experienced deep feelings of grief and pain when a loved one has died. Oftentimes these include not only sadness, but darker emotions such as anger, regret, loneliness, disconnection, and fear that we may never feel joy, or be wholly alive again. In our Western culture, the topic of death is often taboo. Many hold an almost macho attitude toward those who are perceived as grieving too much, for too long, or not long enough. But is there ever a right way to grieve? By exploring the wisdom of religious traditions, psychological and philosophical insights, folklore and personal experience, and finding our shared interconnectedness, we may discover our own path through grief, leading us into the light of healing, and the joy of living.
Religious Education
Changes and Exciting News!
Sunday Religious Education for All Ages
1. Families will be welcomed and encouraged to worship together in our new Family Seating Area, featuring smaller chairs and floor cushions! Our teen childcare workers will help families seated in this area to engage in worship together. Soul Work activities will be available for people of all ages to keep their hands and minds engaged. Each week the teen childcare workers will also offer a 30 minute coffee hour makerspace so parents and caregivers can enjoy fellowship after service while their children are supervised and entertained. Soulful Home materials for families to take home and engage in full week faith development together are now located in the family seating area as well.

2. Children's RE Learning Lab will be offered for children and youth in grades K-8 during worship service on the second Sunday of each month. Following a Time for All Ages, the children and youth will be sung out of the sanctuary to our downstairs Learning Lab, where they will learn about our faith through the lens of the monthly theme using discussions, games, activities, and crafts.
3. On the third Sunday of each month we will offer Adult Religious Education and Children's RE Learning Lab following worship. Adult RE classes will be offered on various topics and themes throughout the year, such as UU history and theology, memoir creation, spirituality and practice. You are not required to attend worship to attend Adult or Children's RE after service. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend Adult RE or learn together in our Children's Learning Lab.
4. Soul Matters Small Groups will be held on the fourth Sunday of the month as well as options for Zoom meetings and/or meetings on a different day of the fourth week of the month. Soul Matters groups are small monthly groups, connected to our worship themes, with a unique practice component that helps us not just think about the themes, but live them. Each month, participants receive a theme-based packet that includes spiritual exercises, questions that encourage reflection on daily living, and recommended resources that help participants explore the themes in more depth. Signups are open now. You will be asked to commit to meet with your group every month through June 2024.
5. Every now and then a month has a fifth Sunday. In Children's RE we celebrate this with "Joyful Noise Sunday." This year we are inviting people of all ages to come after worship to celebrate and develop your unique Unitarian Universalist identity through music! No talent necessary - we will use kazoos, tin can drums, and egg shakers to accompany our enthusiastic (and sometimes off key) singing of our favorite UU hymns. All are welcome!
Throughout the year we will also offer a virtual RE Learning Lab on our website for faith development at home, interactive worship services, family fun events, holiday celebrations, a family social justice project, and a congregation retreat at Murray Grove.
