Surfside Shark Bites
Week of September 25-29, 2023
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Hello, Shark Families!
It's been a fun week at Surfside with lots of great things that occurred on campus this week including our Surfside soccer team activities, our new cosmetic club launched on Thursday, our dual enrollment Hospitality class is running very strong, and the sewing club will start next week. In addition, our elementary students have been exceeding all their goals on their writing assignments. Thank you to our staff and students who make our school an amazing place to work.
As part of our school's mission, we seek to ensure our families and students have the resources they need to thrive. Starting next week, OUSD is offering all students the opportunity to complete the Panorama Survey. The survey helps us understand the perspectives, wants, and needs of our students relative to our schools. Determining the wants and needs of our families and students helps us make decisions that are aligned to the interests of our students and families. Please encourage your students to complete the survey. Students can access the survey by clicking on surveys.panoramaed.com/oceanside and entering their Student ID, which serves as their access code. Students may also access the survey by clicking on the Panorama tile on their rapid ID portal.
Also, please be aware that Oceanside families and students have free access to Care Solace to quickly find verified mental health, behavioral health, and substance use treatment options matched to their needs, regardless of circumstances. Care Solace’s team is available 24/7/365 and can support you in any language. Care Solace can be reached at.888-515-0595 available 24/7/36 or online at www.caresolace.com/ousd and either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Have a great weekend!

Important- This Week
Picture Day: Tuesday October 3, 2023.
The photographer will be on campus from 8am - 2:00pm. Order in advance to receive a discount.
Work Turn In: Friday, October 6, 2023. Return any completed work- partial units are perfectly acceptable. Your Supervising teachers will be assessing completed work, virtual and/or in-person attendance, iReady minutes and more to give credit for the attendance month.
iReady All Stars
We are very excited to see students logging into iReady to work on their personalized lessons, which count fully for math credit. These lessons can be used in lieu of, or in addition to, some of the packet pages. Teachers can also assign instructional lessons to match the packet pages. These assigned lessons are more engaging and student friendly than the mini video lessons found on the iReady bookshelf. We will begin highlighting our iReady All Stars after the students have had a full month to work since finishing the diagnostic.
Music
We have been studying different composers this year and some of their compositions in both virtual and in-person sessions. We’ve watched animations, symphonies, movie clips, organists, and pianists perform and show why they are timeless classics. Our hope is that students will continually be curious about different styles of music and want to learn more about it and the composers.
We have studied:
Scott Joplin- Maple Leaf Rag; The Entertainer
Johann Sebastian Bach- Toccata and Fugue in d minor
Edvard Grieg- In the Hall of the Mountain King; Morning
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart- Eine Kleinanacht Musik; The Marriage of Figaro
Final Notes
As always, we are happy to help customize which packet components will be most beneficial for your student to complete and make the most of your Independent Study experience.
All the Best,
Kelly Crouthamel & Anthony Madsen, your K-5th Supervising Teachers

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
We all have a role to play in suicide prevention. When a suicide happens, those left behind often experience deep shock. Even if they knew the person was struggling, they may not have expected suicide would be the result. However, many people who find themselves in a suicide crisis can and do recover.
- Know the Signs: Learn how to recognize the warning signs and how to respond
- Find the Words: If you are concerned about someone, ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide. Why? Asking directly will create that safe space to address any thoughts they are already having. This can be difficult to do, but being direct provides an opportunity for them to talk and connect.
- Reach Out: You are not alone in this. Before having the conversation, become familiar with some resources to offer.
For additional information, visit the Know the Signs website.

NCTD Rail Safety Month
Throughout the month of September, NCTD is actively participating in a nationwide effort to remind the public of the importance of rail safety. The NCTD Board of Directors also unanimously adopted September as Rail Safety Month to educate the public about dangerous behaviors that lead to tragic and fatal incidents on and around railroad tracks.
We hope you will partner with us to change the staggering rail incident statistics. California continues to have one of the highest numbers of trespassing and rail-related deaths in the nation. In 2022 alone, there were 256 rail incidents in the state, of which, 97 resulted in injury and 159 were fatal. These incidents could have been avoided by following rail safety practices.
You can help ensure that our children and community members know the importance of being safe near train tracks year-round by learning more #RailRules at GoNCTD.com/Safety, and by following @GoNCTD on social media.
