MMS Weekly Update
December 15, 2023
Make up work
MMS was hit hard this week with illness. Our make up work policy allows for make up work time to be equal to the number of days absent. We understand returning to school with piled up work can be overwhelming. Feel free to reach out to individual teachers if you have concerns or need help. We want our students healthy first and caught up on work second.
Artists of the Week
Kaylie Ackley is our 8th grade artist of the week! Kaylie used great craftsmanship and persistence when completing her paper mache pinata! Kaylie created a radio to celebrate International Music Day on October 1st. Great job Kaylie!
Seventh grader Will Greig is our artist of the week. Will created his mask using paper mache and a very basic armature. He created the beak and feathers by using an attachment technique and building up the paper mache. His inspiration came from a traditional mask from India. Will's attention to detail really stands out in this project. Great job Will!
This Week's Highlight:
Ms. Russette's Digital Literacy students are researching and presenting their research of a major technological company. A few of the research prompts are "what makes their company a leader in their field" and "does this company have any emerging technologies?"
Mrs. Santeiu, Mrs. McKenzie, Ms.Gearns, and Ms. Blunt’s 6th grade science students created imaginary “Bloops” as they explored the transfer of genes from parents to offspring. Students determined which traits the “Bloop” received from their parents by examining the alleles passed to them from each parent.
This week in physical education all 3 grade levels are wrapping up fitness testing which includes push ups, sit ups, wall sits, planks, 16 minute jog, timed one mile run and the pacer test. After the fitness tests Mr. Habkirk and Davey's 8th grade classes are participating in a hockey tournament. 6th and 7th grade students are participating in team handball after fitness testing this week.
Congratulations Robotics!
Our MMS robotics teams, the RoboToasters, ended their competition season this past weekend with the RoboToasters Blue participating in the Michigan state-wide robotics tournament. This is the third year in a row that MMS robotics has made it to a state competition!
Both of our teams, the RoboToasters Blue and the RoboToasters Orange demonstrated considerable improvement over early matches in the season and have been award winners.
This season, both the RoboToasters Blue and RoboToasters Orange teams built new robots, designed leveraging computer-aided design (CAD), wrote autonomous software programs, and designed and built capabilities to launch paper airplane drones, as well as, to suspend the robots off the ground.
Both teams were award winners during state qualifiers.
Our Orange team won 3rd place in the Design award during a competition on November 4th. The design award is presented to teams who innovative design in their robot.
The Blue team won two awards on December 2nd. They won First place in the Innovate award which highlights innovative and creative robot design. The team also won third place in the Inspire award. This award is given to a role model robotics team and was named a top contender for many other judged awards.
Congratulations to both Orange and Blue teams on a fantastic fall season!

Non-Homestead Operating Millage Renewal & Restoration Election 2024
On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, South Lyon Community School district voters will be asked whether to approve the non-homestead operating millage. The Non-homestead operating millage is the school district’s operating millage and has a direct impact on the per pupil foundation allowance that the district receives from the State of Michigan.
If approved, the non-homestead operating millage would result in no increase in taxes to primary homestead homeowners.
The operating millage would be for a period of 10 years, 2025-2034.
This renewal, if approved, would keep the existing 18 mills tax levy on businesses, rental properties and second homes.
This renewal, if approved, would maintain an estimated $15 million for the general operations of the school district in 2025.
If the operating millage renewal fails and is not available to levy in 2025, every operation of the school district would be closely analyzed in order to cut from the future budget to account for the loss in revenue.
More information is available on the SLCS website at www.slcs.us so voters can make an informed decision about this millage proposal.
Please email requestinfo@slcs.us if you have any questions.
