A Message from GQES Administration!
Chameleons RISE: Raising Intentionality Strengthening Expectations for students, teachers, administration, and families.
Dear GQES Families,
Thank you for sending your child to us every day, on time, and ready to learn! It is so important for us to have your child in our school every day, learning!
We would like to honor the following classes for having the best attendance for their grade level for the past 3 weeks:
- Ms. Swank's prek-class
- Ms. J. Berry/Ms. S. Dorsey's kindergarten class
- Ms. M. Faliskie's grade one class
- Ms. A. Helms' grade two class
- Ms. C. Averitt's grade three class
- Ms. B. Bowers' grade four classs
Please see Ways to help your child be successful Every child needs to learn the 109 heart words (to spell, write, and read these words) in addition to learning math facts too. Stay in touch with your child's teacher to know what your child is learning and how you can support them at home, please.
Know we value your help as a partner in your child's education. We are very grateful to have parents ask for us to send work home so they can help their child gain skills and/or increase their knowledge.
When reading the book, RESULTS NOW by Mike Schmoker, here is some information that is important for teaching and learning, because all students need:
1. Systematic phonics instruction (This is in place in WPS).
2. Reading GENEROUS amounts of text (articles, poems, stories, books) in English/Language Arts and in Science/Social Studies classes and electives. We do not just want our students filling out worksheets or being on computers for screen time.
3. WRITING FREQUENTLY: in both short and long formats and informal and less formal modes. (THIS IS NOT DICTATION or TRANSCRIPTION writing, it is COMPOSING and THINKING when writing----we want our students to be fluent writers, learn genres (forms), and then, focus on correctness once their idea is on the page.
4. Participating frequently in purposeful discussions: We want our teachers using driven, focused, and rigorous questions for our students to think and discuss.
Weather can be interesting, especially now in the wintertime! Make sure your child has a coat, gloves, and hats to keep warm. If you need help, call our school at 540-662-3575. Here is our inclement weather plan at GQES:
- Students in K, 1st, and 2nd will have paper/pencil packets that will be sent home prior to a Snow Day, provided enough weather notice has been made.
- K-2nd should work on these packets on a Virtual Snow Day and turn in the completed packet to their teacher when they return to school.
- All 3rd-4th grade students will have 30-60 minutes of live synchronous learning using Google Meet. Google Meet links will be posted by teachers in Canvas. Students will click on the Google Meet icon in Canvas or the posted Google Meet link.
- If we can send chromebooks home in enough notice for grades 3 and 4, we will ask for ALL grade 3 and 4 GOOGLE MEETS TO BEGIN at 9:00am. They may last up to 45 minutes. Grades 3 and 4 may also send home paper packets, as not everyone can have access to technology. Questions? Contact your child’s teacher and/or the main office at 540-662-3575.
Recess Tidbit: You probably knew.....there is ZERO research that says keeping kids inside and not going outside for recess(es) will help improve test scores.
Last.....
- Always, always support your child's positive behavior BE KIND by encouraging your child to show our expectations at GQES:
