Message from Ms. Masone

Dear Families:

I am so deeply appreciative of our community today as I write this newsletter. Our warm, supportive community showed up in force to support MANIBOO at MSES. Thank you to all of the parents, MSHS students and students from MSMS for volunteering your time. I am so very grateful we banded together after three years to bring back this wonderful community event.

Halloween is on Monday, October 31st, and we have a Halloween parade at 1:30pm outside on the playpark. Students are invited to dress up in their costume after lunch and show their outfits to their classmates and community at the parade. Parents, if you plan to be at school on Monday, please remember to bring identification to enter the school and arrive early. Our gates remain locked until school adjourns for the day.

Merchant Trick-or-Treating begins right after school Monday on Manitou Avenue from 3-5pm. Thank you to the City of Manitou Springs for facilitating this event. In previous years, during COVID, Manitou merchants provided both treats and finances to support our local school. This really is a special place!

Fifth grade was able to head out to the Pueblo museum to lean more about Leonardo DaVinci, a great artist and inventor. Students shared their adventures and taught us adults a few things. Did you know that along with creating The Last Supper, DaVinci invented the parachute, scuba gear, the first tank and exercise machine. This Renaissance man was prolific!

This week I was able to observe Eureka Math lessons and Core Knowledge Language Arts lessons. I caught myself smiling at the high quality of instruction your teachers provide to your children. Our teachers have so much integrity and talent. I truly cannot imagine working anywhere else. We are fortunate to be part of this learning community.

Again, MANIBOO was a smashing success.Thank you to the members of our phenomenal Parent Action Committee, PAC, for their MANIBOO vision. Our auction remains open for one more week. Bid here.

Kindergarten Buddies

Ms. Farrell's kindergarten class and Ms. Mussi's third grade class got together to do a Halloween activity this week. Third graders supported their kindergarten buddies by helping them read.

Mrs. Schneider's Kindergarten class and Ms. Woytko-Morris's third grade classes are buddies too. They came together on Friday so third graders could support our kinders making monsters and creating a sentence: M is for monster.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students began a new science domain this week about plants. This week, we have learned that plants are living, they all have similar basic parts, and about the life cycle of plants. Next week, we will learn about pollination, the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees, and how we use plants in our everyday lives. Here are a few questions that you can ask your little expert:

What are the four things all plants need to live? (water, food, air, and sunlight)
What are the basic parts of a flower? (roots, stem, leaves, petals, and seeds)
Explain the life cycle of a plant. (The plant begins as a seed in the soil, then it sprouts into a seedling, then it grows into a full-grown mature plant, and then it loses its leaves/petals and seeds, and finally the seeds go back into the ground.)

Second Grade

This week in Second Grade we have been wrapping up Ancient Asian civilizations. Our students have been learning all about celebrations including Diwali and the Chinese New Year. Next ,we will be learning about Ancient Greek civilizations. Here are some things that you can ask your expert.

What symbols of good luck are displayed during Chinese New Year? (the color red, dragons, red is used to decorate homes and streets)

When do the Chinese usually celebrate their birthdays? (on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year and not on the day they were born)

In Math we are learning about the connections between money and place value. We have just started using place value disks to begin representing different numbers and learning about how to exchange the disks between place values. We will also be working on how to model numbers with more than 9 ones or 9 tens. Our kiddos are hard at work solving problems with partners and thinking deeply about Math.
