Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - November 14, 2022
Washburne Families,
Last week ended with over 100 seventh graders hanging out in the Washburne Cafeteria for music, churros, hot chocolate and fun times with friends. A huge thank you to the PTO for coordinating this event and for all of our parent volunteers. We are looking forward to hosting our 8th graders for a similar event in a few weeks. We also wanted to thank the parents who were able to join us for coffee and conversation on Friday. We are hopeful that the conversations were informative.
These opportunities to connect with our families and provide time for our students to connect socially are a huge part of keeping our building connected to the community. Thank you, as always, for your partnership.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
Lockdown Drill This Week
Carleton Washburne School will be conducting our annual lockdown drill in conjunction with the Winnetka Police Department this Tuesday, November 15th. Illinois law requires that all schools conduct a drill with law enforcement within the first 90 school days of the year. Prior to the drill, Washburne teachers will be discussing it with students to ensure that they understand that it is a planned drill and to know what actions to take.
Illinois law allows for parents to opt out of the drill with written notice to their child’s school. If you would like to opt your child out of the drill, please indicate so using this form. You do not need to take any action if your child will participate in the drill.
Window to Washburne
Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.
Project-based learning continues to be a priority across our classrooms, and students in Ms. Berna’s 7th grade science class recently completed an outstanding unit focusing on the rusty-patched bumblebee. One of the key elements of project-based learning is authenticity; in other words, there is a real-world component of the students’ learning. In this case, after learning about the reasons why this pollinator has become endangered, students created plans to spread awareness and help this species. Students created many different thoughtful plans, ranging from creating gardens in Winnetka to removing invasive buckthorn on our school’s campus. This past week, students presented their plans to an audience of parents, students, and staff members.
Kudos to Ms. Berna for designing such a thoughtful project-based learning experience for our students, and kudos to our students for creating such thoughtful projects.
What’s Happening in Related Studies
As this school year's first trimester ends, we find our Innovation Technology students completing STE(A)M challenges; our Computer Scientists finishing coding their Capstone projects; our CW Broadcasters and Video Producers finalizing their videos. The students will then add these artifacts to their STE(A)M Sites Portfolio before heading into the Thanksgiving Break.
