"Trashion" Show!
On December 1st, students from the DECA 2 class will be hosting an environmentally-friendly fashion show to raise money for the Masco DECA club. This event will consist of upcycled clothes, and using recycled resources to make fashion. You have the choice of walking in the show, or coming to support your friends. Participate by yourself or with a group of friends, find the fliers posted around the school and scan the QR code, or click here to sign up to participate in the show by November 1st. We hope to see you there!
Class Project
This week in Ms. Estes’ DECA 1 and 2 classes, students made kindness cards to thank and show appreciation for someone in their life. The participation in “Kindness for Colleen” honors the life of Colleen Ritzer, the Danvers teacher whose life was cut way too short 10 years ago on 10/22/13. We hope you will be able to spread a little kindness this week in honor of Colleen’s life, too! 🌸😊
Field Trip
Fashion Design students attended a field trip to the Peabody Essex Museum on Friday, Oct. 13th. Students were give a guided tour of the fashion and textile gallery by curator Petra Slinkard. Students will draw inspiration from their museum trip when working on their next fashion design projects. Petra will visit Masconomet in January where students will present their work to her.

The Miracle Worker 🎭 from 1963 to 2023
When the Masconomet Theater Company started production of The Miracle Worker this fall, little thought was given to the students who staged the story of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan years ago. But during the Saturday performance of the show, one of the audience members found himself transported back in time to when he had the role of Helen’s father— Capt. Keller.
It was 60 years ago that Peter Haywood auditioned, rehearsed and performed the play for the Masco community. “It was a real kick for me to see these students putting on the play. I really enjoyed it,” said Haywood
In fact, Mr. Haywood got a sneak peek at the show, attending the company’s run through prior to the Oct. 19 opening night. He and another 1963 alum who played Mrs. Keller in the show were part of a class of 1963 alumni tour of Masconomet and saw posters advertising the show in the halls. Their tour guide for the day, Jan Smallman (administrative assistant to the athletic director) introduced them to Leanne Towle, (stage business manager), who invited them to attend a rehearsal after their tour.
As the first of three shows the Masco Theater Company will put on in the 2023-24 school year, The Miracle Worker stands out because it is a show Pereira has always wanted to direct. “Prior to coming to Masco, I was a special education teacher for seven years. This story has always intrigued me and I was so glad our talented company could bring it to our community. Helen Keller’s story is not just inspiring, it is a reminder that ALL students are capable of learning and deserve the chance to succeed.”

💡 Reminders 💡
Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)
On Wednesday, November 8, Masco Middle and High School students will be participating in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The anonymous, self-reported results identify strengths, weaknesses, normative behaviors, perceptions and misperceptions to inform and guide prevention education, as well as serve as a tool to engage in conversations with our youth, families, community members, partners and organizations.
Your child’s participation is voluntary and anonymous; no names will ever be collected, used, or reported. The survey will ask about risk and protective factors including: substance use activity; behaviors related to intentional and unintentional injuries; eating habits and physical activity; sexual health; student’s feeling of school and community connectedness; resistance strategies; use of social media; bullying behaviors; and student’s perceptions of norms and risky behaviors. Find past years’ survey data at: tritowncouncil.org/coalition.
If you DO NOT want your child to participate, please print and return this form no later than Monday, November 6, 2023. Thank you for your cooperation with this important research effort.
