Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
Nearly two years into the pandemic, we continue to face new challenges and opportunities. Thanks to all for your support of our school as we entered a new phase of the pandemic with the changes that went into effect on Monday. I know these changes were welcome to some, upsetting to some and somewhere in between for others. I make announcements every day at school, and I always end by telling the students that I look forward to watching them be safe, respectful and responsible. Two weeks ago we did the Great Kindness Challenge and focused on spreading kindness around our school and community. When I made my announcements on Monday, I told the students and staff that I knew everyone had different feelings about these new changes and that all feelings were valid. I told them that this time gives us an opportunity to put the ideas about respect and kindness into practice. We want to show care and respect for every member of our school community, no matter what their feelings about the changes to our practices. Please feel free to reach out if there is anything we can do to support you and your family at any time.
We look forward to celebrating Valentine's Day on Monday. Students are welcome to bring cards for their classmates. They may bring other small items, but no food items are permitted. We are thankful to our PTO room parents who are planning fun activities for our classroom parties from 2-3pm that day. Only the two parent volunteers will be in attendance at the parties.
During the month of February, Lions Park students and staff are doing various activities to honor Black History Month. Students at all grades are doing various activities, reading books, watching videos and engaging in discussions to learn about the achievements of African Americans. While these are explored during various units of study throughout the year, we welcome this opportunity to particularly highlight their contributions during this month.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly

PEPS
District 57 is proud to announce that D57 PEPS (Partnering with Educators and Parents to Support student needs) will host an in-person and on-demand screening of a powerful new documentary called "Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety." All families are invited to attend the screening of this 56-minute film, which is appropriate for ages 10+, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Lincoln LRC. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by D57 social workers and psychologists. The film will also be available virtually starting at 6:30 on Feb. 24; it can be viewed through March 3 -- we will send a link to register the week of the screening.
"Angst" is intended to start a conversation around the growing problem of anxiety. It features world champion swimmer Michael Phelps, experts in the field and regular teens, who come together to explore the academic and social stress and pandemic fears and uncertainty that have increased mental health challenges among young people. The film breaks down what is currently going on and what young people can do to help themselves and others. It includes candid interviews and provides tips, tricks, strategies and resources to help reset thinking patterns, push back against anxiety and support others.

COVID Vaccination
If your child has received two vaccine doses, you can submit proof of vaccination at this link. The form does require you to have a Google account. If you do not have a Google account, please email a photograph of the proof of vaccination to our school nurse, Mrs. Bauer, at cbauer@d57.org. Students who are two weeks past their second dose are considered to be fully vaccinated. State guidelines say that these students do not have to quarantine due to exposure to COVID. We will still notify these families if their child is a close contact, but the students may continue to come to school.
