TDOE Releases ELA Standards Guides
The ELA standards guides are a supplemental resource to the Tennessee ELA standards that are designed to provide instructional leaders and teachers with a deeper understanding of each standard. This understanding will enhance teachers’ ability to facilitate the use of high-quality instructional materials in the classroom. The guides include four sections for each standard:
- An unpacking of key elements of the standard
- A glossary of key terms in the standard
- Examples of how the standard can be represented in classroom tasks
- A snapshot of the vertical progression of the standard
These guides are based on an integrated model of literacy and reflect the purpose of the ELA standards: to access the meaning of and to build knowledge from texts. With these standards, students can read challenging, meaningful texts, think deeply about the meaning of texts, explore the meaning of texts in conversation with other students, make real-world applications, and effectively communicate their learning.

WHAT I ENJOY ABOUT THE WORK:
I have eight years of teaching experience under my belt as an English/Language Arts teacher, and I LOVE that there is still so much more for me to learn! It’s like going on a hero’s journey where I’m constantly learning new lessons, winning victories with that newfound knowledge, and returning to my classroom as a completely transformed educator.
What I love the most about teaching English/Language Arts are the conversations around literature and composition with my students. I love that I’m not just an English teacher. I see myself as someone who is responsible for increasing my students’ moral compass towards current events and world issues. For example, when we read an excerpt from John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, my students empathized with the farmers and their families from that period. We grew together through our conversations and their various compositions on the importance of taking care of the earth through ethical farming practices, the importance of new beginnings, and helping one another in difficult times.
I enjoy watching my students become active in government policy through their participation in the Metro Memphis Urban Debate League, which helps to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Lastly, I love teaching because since my childhood, the classroom has been one of my happy places to explore and go on adventures through reading and writing. I want to continue sharing this gift with my students.
