PRINCIPAL KŌRERO
“The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible”
As parents, guardians, carers and whānau we know that the earlier we create secure good
habits the better. In thinking of good habits that future proof our children's lives, we can’t really
go past the tried and true mantra of “eat healthy, exercise regularly, think positively”. These
three messages go hand in hand – a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind, while a healthy
mind allows us to reason what’s good for our bodies. The benefits of remembering and acting
upon these, set up the basis for keeping our own lives in balance.
It has been a privilege to watch our children play on the sports field, on our new court and soon
they will be partaking in swimming, the Amazing Race and Tabloids. The year 9 and 10 students
are also soon to embark on a camp to Rotorua, where they will get to be active and celebrate
the learning and goals achieved this academic year.
It has to be said that active children giving attention to exercise and a positive attitude, showing
us the best versions of themselves, is a win, win.
The importance of community voice
Schools are communities of human beings, bound together in an organic, continuously
developing web of relationships. Our school is a community of learners and without community,
nothing else matters. Such communities cannot be created by authorities and experts outside
the school who send down mandates and expectations from above. The wisdom of the good
school must be worked out by those who live within its community. When this work takes place
in an environment of intense care, students learn and thrive.
In light of this, shortly you will receive an online form that will ask you questions about how you
feel our school is meeting the needs of our students and wider community. After which you will
receive the results and then our yearly community consultation plan. I look forward to your
participation in this important community voice.
We learn together
Walking through our school it is wonderful to see and hear our busy hubs of learning. Student
engagement is high and I meet happy children who are keen to share their learning with me. We
know that you spend the time talking to your children about the exciting things that they are
learning each day.
We encourage you to spend a few minutes asking them some of the following questions. Name
something that you did today that was awesome! What challenges did you accept today? What
questions did you ask? What feedback did you receive today? What did you do with it? How did
you show that you weren’t going to give up when you got in that learning pit?
How were you kind today? How were you responsible today?
It was a privilege to hand out certificates to students who were recognised in our student-led
celebration assembly, for their attitude, progress and achievement.
As an educator, I am at my happiest when I see our older students develop a wider set of skills,
repertoires and perspectives over their time at our School. I am the most disappointed too,
when I see opportunities squandered and promise unfulfilled. Through our pastoral care system,
we continue to track the development and engagement of our students in the important
elements of our culture.
Ultimately, when things are not going so well, we always want to work in partnership with
parents to ensure that we are getting the best out of every student in our school.
You will have heard the news reports regarding the technical issues with the computerized
NCEA examinations in some subjects. Please view the post on our Facebook page with an
explanation from NZQA.
Congratulations to Mr Bright’s class for winning the attendance award twice in a row.
Term dates for next year
As we approach the end of this academic year, we recognise the need for the delivery of next
year's term and ‘Teacher Only Days’ (TOD), to aid with your planning.
Teacher Only Days 2024
Term 1 TOD 29.1.24 and 30.1.24 and TOD 12.3.24
Term 2 TOD 4.6.24
Term 3 TOD 19.8.24
We have attached a TOD to Term 3 as there is no public holiday. This is designed to be the
halfway point in the term and will give our students a mid-term break and our staff a hauora
day/team building. Term 4 has no TOD due to NCEA examinations.

Kaitake Tahi - Christmas in Summer
Ever seen Santa out surfing!?
These slides are an example of a few slide animations that were created in response to a book students had watched/listened to… Santa going for a surf!
Students in Kaitake Tahi have had a heap of fun using Christmas as their Kaupapa! From learning about how Christmas trees are made and farmed to how glass ornaments are made.
