Family Newsletter
Cleveland STEM High School
September 15, 2023
Hello Cleveland Families!
During our first full week together, I found myself inspired by our young people as I visited them in their classrooms: I heard students articulately describe the differences between science and pseudoscience, share insights into how they would use data visualization strategies to make raw data more meaningful, create stunning art displays (see below!), and share vulnerably with one another as they worked toward building classroom community. Cleveland High School serves extraordinary students, and it has been great to get to know so many of them already.
As we settle into the rhythm of this new school year, please take a look at this week's newsletter to learn about some more important events and opportunities coming up. We hope you have a safe and restful weekend with your loved ones.
With Gratitude,
Principal Jeff Lam
Assistant Principal Jacklyn Cable
Assistant Principal Laura Roesener
Admin Intern Jenn Kekuna
Admin Intern Trisha Pilapil
Check out our students' work!
This week, our art students in Ms. Camber's class created their first art installation. Inspired by the work (and especially this project) from artist Candy Chang, students brainstormed feelings they hope to experience while making work in the art room. After putting all those responses in a bag, students chose one at random to turn into a sign, using colors they associate with their chosen feeling. The art class now has their own "This is a Good Place to..." installation right as you enter the room. Thank you Ms. Camber for this incredible work!

Cleveland Athletics
Our Athletics program is an incredible opportunity for all students to find a place to stretch themselves, develop new skills, and find community. We are proud of Cleveland's student athletes!
This week, the volleyball team swept their match against Rainier Beach, winning in three straight sets! This is just the start of great things for this team. We play Franklin this next Monday - please come out to support the team! It has to be noted that this team has a combined GPA of 3.85 - they are winners on the court and in the classroom. Go Lady Eagles!
We have incredible student turnout for many of our Fall Athletics programs: Cross country has 45 student athletes, Golf has 32, Volleyball has 35, and Ultimate Frisbee has 45 - more than any other school in West Seattle or the Southeast.
We are looking for more athletes to join Football and Slow-pitch Softball. Please sign up on final forms, or come speak with our Athletic Director Dan Jurdy.
Go Eagles!

Student club fair on 9/19 during lunch
We want Cleveland to be a school community where everyone belongs. To support this, we are excited to be holding our first CHS Club Fair during lunch this Tuesday, in the courtyard between Buildings 1 and 3. We encourage all students to check this out and get involved in our school community. We have a lot of club opportunities, and we also offer the opportunity for students to start their own. Encourage your student to visit the club fair to get connected and explore their interests.
Support for Running Start students
Running Start students will be starting classes at their college soon. To help ensure our Running Start students have a smooth start (especially our first year Running Start students), we want to invite you to join us on Tuesday, September 19, from 9: 00 - 10:00 am in the Cleveland auditorium. You'll have time to look at Canvas (the Learning Management System many colleges use), ctcLINK, and participate in a Q&A so that you feel fully prepared for your fist day of classes.
Students should bring a laptop and be ready to sign into Canvas and ctcLINK. Click here to activate your account now if you haven't done so already.
The following Cleveland Staff members will be leading this meeting:
