Student of the Month (SOTM)
Congratulations to Jacob P., Carter C., Noah D., Olivia C., Lenny L. and Cristian R. for being named January’s students of the month. Students were nominated for their leadership, exemplary character, outstanding attitude, progress in class or personal development. Here are some thoughts from each of this month’s recipients:
Jacob P.
It means a lot to me to be student of the month because it is my first year at the middle school, and I work very hard.
Carter C.
I'm thankful to my teachers for recognizing my efforts. It means a lot to me. Some advice I would give to everybody is that no matter what happens, look ahead to the good things instead of looking back at the bad things.
Noah D.
Help people when they are lonely, don't be a bystander, if someone is sitting alone, then go to them and talk to them.
Olivia C.
When I think of someone as a student of the month, I think of someone who is respectful to all and will step in to help someone in need. Some advice to give my peers for the future is that being confident in what you do will make a difference in one's life.
Lenny L.
“When we do the minimum we get the minimum in life."This quote is very important to me because it motivates me to do all the extra work possible, whether it's in sports or academics. If I were to give one piece of advice to my peers it would be to work hard and treat people the same as you would like to be treated.
Cristian R.
Being student of the month means I am doing my best. My advice to my peers is that you can make a change for others by helping them, being kind, and understanding their feelings.

Bike Safety
We would like to remind you of some bike safety rules.
By law, all children ages 13 and under must wear a helmet while riding a bike. In Mamaroneck, bicycle riders must consider the safety of pedestrians on sidewalks (and must dismount and walk their bikes on Mamaroneck Avenue).
Unlike joggers, bicyclists should ride in the same direction as auto traffic while on the road.
Students must be mindful of how they are riding their bicycles while on our MS/HS campus. There are lots of staff, students and parents walking and many cars that are driving during arrival and dismissal.
Please review this New York State resource on Bike Safety. Please remember that all of us who use the roads, whether on foot, on a bike, or in a car, have to pay attention to each other to prevent physical injury.

After school clubs started the week of October 2nd. They are open to students in grades 6-8. Students can try different clubs or if they are in 6th grade they can also participate in intramural sports. The club presentation as well as the schedule for intramural sports is below.

News From The Classroom:
7th Grade ELA - Mr. Tinnirello: Students in seventh grade English classes are reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver, a sci-fi novel about the importance of recognizing and accepting differences. In addition, students have almost completed their sci-fi independent books and will then start work on a book report that is due Friday, February 16th.
7th Grade ELA B - Mr. Macli: As we continue reading both the novel and graphic novel versions of The Giver, students will revisit the question of which societal values are most important to them. Students will also examine the rules within the highly-structured society of the book, and evaluate which rules are worth keeping and which should be discarded.
7th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: A new group of students began art this quarter. They started by creatively designing art portfolios to store their work. Next, they learned about Keith Haring to create visual stories inspired by his work using figures, colors, rhythm, and repetition in their work.
8th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: A new group of students began art this quarter. They started by creatively designing art portfolios to store their work. Next, they learned about the Op Art movement and looked at paintings created by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley for inspiration. Students traced their hands and drew curved lines to give the appearance that their hand is popping off the page. Adding value has also helped to show this illusion as well as give their work more dimension.
