The Eagle Eye
Children are the heart of Imlay!
Dear Imlay Families,
A Message from Mrs. McCalley, Principal
February marks the beginning of the second semester of the school year. Can you believe we are already half way through this school year? I want to thank the Imlay community for the amazing support they are showing to the school while we continue to navigate COVID-19. Thank you!
I also want to highlight our teachers and staff at Imlay! They are working hard daily to provide instruction to kids in class and on a required absence at home all the while meeting both social-emotional and academic needs of the students. A huge THANK YOU to every staff member for helping Imlay be the amazing school it is!
As part of the Imlay Community, our families are also a vital part! Imlay uses a few communication tools to help keep you in the loop....
Remind-Remind is an app which is used across all of HSD for communicating to families. Whole school, class & individual parent-teacher or parent-principal communication will occur through Remind.
Phone Calls & Email-Please double check your email address and phone numbers on ParentVue to ensure we have the correct contact information for you! In case of an emergency with your student we will call you! Emails will also be sent with information.
Facebook/Instagram/Twitter--We use social media to share the amazing things that are occurring at Imlay! Follow us on any (and all) of the platforms to get a glimpse of what students are doing at school!
If you ever have a question, please do not hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher, the office or myself! We would love to help out!

Comprehensive Sexual Health Lesson Information
Dear Imlay Elementary Parents/Guardians:
As part of our health education program, our district provides age appropriate, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) for all students, K-12. All instruction is based on Oregon Law and the Oregon Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators adopted by the Oregon State Board of Education in December of 2016.
Three key laws guide our sexuality education efforts:
Human Sexuality Education (2009),
Healthy Teen Relationships (2013), and
Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education (2015)
In communication with superintendents and principals, the Director of the Oregon Department of Education, Colt Gill, explained that “These laws provide for consistent instruction, are based on the most current evidence and best practices, and equip students with the knowledge and skills to realize their health, well-being, and educational goals. Sexuality education supports young people with skills to delay sexual initiation, prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), promote their own health, and reduce sexual violence, harassment, and bullying.” In the Hillsboro School District, we are committed to the delivery of this content by skilled, caring, and dedicated staff, in safe, inclusive environments.
HSD’s Comprehensive Sexuality Education Plan includes the right of parents/guardians to be notified of upcoming sexual health lessons (as is the purpose of this letter), to review instructional materials, and to propose alternative learning activities for their student(s) if they choose to.
Your student's classroom teacher will be sending you a letter (looking just like this) which will provide the dates and times of the lessons at their grade level. Lessons will begin on March 30, 2022. Students who are opted out of the lessons will be provided an alternate location to do an alternate activity during the lessons.
As a parent/guardian, we encourage you to learn more about our K-12 Comprehensive Sexuality Plan and teaching materials. To make this as easy as possible, we have posted documents on our Comprehensive Sexuality Education Plan website that outline the standards, curricula, and instructional materials used at each grade-level. (Note: If/when materials cannot be posted online due to copyright restrictions, you may call the school and make an appointment to view them in person.) Remember, parents/guardians have the right to utilize our opt-out process if they wish to have their student(s) participate in alternate activities during sexual health instruction (Opt-Out Form).
If you have any questions/concerns about the health curriculum, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Sincerely,
Jen McCalley

Volunteers at Imlay Elementary
We are in need of parent volunteers! We are so excited to have parents back in our building to volunteer. There are three steps to move through to volunteer:
1. Go to: https://www.hsd.k12.or.us/Page/163 to fill out the volunteer background check.
2. Once these checks have cleared, you will receive an email asking you to complete a survey and upload proof of COVID-19 vaccination, per the Governor’s vaccination mandate.* (*Volunteers may fill out a form requesting a medical or religious exception; however, these will only be considered on an as-needed basis as staff availability allows. Anyone receiving an approved exception will be required to follow a set of increased safety measures when volunteering.)
3. In addition, all volunteers will need to submit to a fingerprint-based criminal records check by March 28, 2022, in order to continue volunteering. Until this check is completed, volunteers will not be assigned duties that could put them in a situation where they have direct, unsupervised contact with students. If the check is not completed by March 28, 2022, your volunteer status will go from “approved” to “pending” and you will no longer be allowed to volunteer.

Walking and Rolling Is Good For Your Heart
February is American Heart Health Month! The heart gets stronger and healthier with exercise but unfortunately studies estimate that only half of students in the U.S. get their 60 minutes of recommended exercise. Walking and rolling (biking, scooting, and skateboarding) to and from school is a great way to fit exercise into a student’s day—plus it’s fun!! Consider walking or rolling to school this month. Visit Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/SRTS to learn more about the Safe Routes to School Program. The goal of this program is to create safe, fun and convenient ways for Hillsboro families make the choice to walk, roll, or bus to school.
State Testing Opt-Out Forms
The state testing window is officially open. (For our 3rd-6th grade students, as well as our English Language Learners for ELPA). At Imlay, we will start testing in mid-April for most grades. If you would like to opt your child out of state testing, please see the following link for instructions. OPT-OUT State Testing

Talented and Gifted Information
SERVICES OFFERED FOR TALENTED AND GIFTED (TAG) STUDENTS
Parents are welcome to refer their child for services designed for students identified as talented and gifted. Students who score at or above the 97th percentile on a nationally standardized, norm-referenced test of overall reading or math or on a mental abilities test, and have other confirming evidence that they learn at a rapid rate and advanced level, are identified as TAG students. With parent input, individual plans are made to adjust the rate and level of the student’s instruction to meet his or her specific needs.
If you think your child may qualify for TAG services and want information about the referral and identification process, please contact: Jen McCalley 503-844-1090
