October 12, 2023
Dear Hawthorn Families,
We are writing to address the recent worldwide reports of potential violence against Jewish communities slated for tomorrow, October 13.
We have been in close communication with the Vernon Hills Police Department, and they have reported that there is no direct threat to our community. However, out of an abundance of caution, we will have an increased police presence on both the north and south campuses tomorrow. Students will also have recess indoors.
Additionally, in light of the increasing number of violent images and videos circulating on social media platforms, we have temporarily restricted student access to YouTube on school devices. While we have robust content filtering processes in place, no system is entirely foolproof. Our goal is to ensure the well-being of students while using online tools.
We are leaning on the strength of our community during these times. If you or your child see or hear something unsafe or concerning, please prioritize the safety of all and immediately report it. It is essential for every member of our community to remain vigilant and engaged in our collective safety.
If you have any questions or believe your child could benefit from additional support, please contact your school’s principal, assistant principal, or social worker so that we may work together.
Thank you for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Dr. Pete Hannigan
Superintendent of Schools
