NOVEMBER 15, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
Next week is a short week with the Thanksgiving holiday. There is no school Thursday, November 23 or Friday, November 24. This is a time of transition between fall and winter and a time of appreciation and gratitude.
This last week, I’m appreciating students who have excelled academically and in extra-curricular commitments who signed Collegiate Division I and Division II letters of intent on November 8, for next year: Jake Birdwell (Golf - University of Illinois), Olivia Kesti – (Basketball - Augustana University), Ashlyn Peterson (Softball - Concordia - St. Paul), Breanna Weilert (Soccer - Bemidji State University). Congratulations to these student-athletes!
One of our Mathletes, sophomore Sam Kretzschmar, also had a big week! He competed last weekend in the Harvard-MIT Invitational Math contest as a member of the Minnesota Gold All-State Math team. This competition is considered the Rose Bowl of math competitions with 700 of the best math competitors for each state. Sam and his fellow MN Gold Mathletes placed 9th out of 100 teams!
There are many ways for students to get involved and find success beyond the classroom. Here are some of the winter activities and athletics starting or holding informational meetings this week or next: curling club, speech, robotics, fashion club, alpine ski, girls and boys basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, Nordic ski, boys and girls hockey, adapted floor hockey. In addition, there are a multitude of student interest clubs for students to get involved in.
Tomorrow, we have our next pulse check with families. One topic that surfaces in community conversations and in our pulse check comments is vaping. I’d like give a little update on some new tools we are using this year. So far, we've seen a dramatic decrease in the number of vaping incidents in and around our school.
While there are many reasons for the decrease in vaping incidents, one reason is vaping sensors and alarms in our restrooms. Any time these sensors pick up vape scent, an audible alarm sounds. This alarm is new. Staff follow up each time the alarm sounds and the response includes consequences for violating a school rule as well as education about vaping and access to resources on how to stop.
We're encouraged by the decrease in vaping incidents. We will also continue our work to detect and prevent incidents from occurring. We know this is important work for developing and maintaining an inviting learning environment for all.
After the Thanksgiving weekend, students will be returning for last week of first Trimester. Please reinforce with your student the importance of remaining academically focused, attentive and punctual until the end to maximizing their learning. Thank you as always for your ongoing support and partnership. One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!
