A Note From the Principal
Good Morning River Hawk Families,
WELCOME to our new River Hawk families and welcome back to our returning families! It's hard to believe summer is over and we're already back in school, but the enthusiasm and energy of our River Hawks is a great thing to see out on campus. In talking to students and staff, we've had a wonderful first week of school!
This weekly newsletter is a great resource and tool for YOU, our parents! You will always find the important dates section right below my opening note and then a wealth of information to keep you "in the know" so you don’t miss school deadlines! Please take a moment each weekend to read through my newsletter so you're not left out and relying on your student to give you important school news!
Our Advisory Period meets every day, except Early Release Wednesdays (RioTV is still shown in the first class). Advisory is a 26 minute period for students to connect with an adult, work on make-up work, arrange to meet a teacher for extra support, clarification, or to complete make-up tests or quizzes, for sustained silent reading to increase our students' vocabulary and reading fluency and to impart some meaningful lessons to our student body. Students can also utilize this time to email a teacher to make an appointment or ask clarifying questions and their teacher will respond as soon as they're able. All students are expected to be reading or working during our Advisory Period. We will occasionally run safety drills during this period and will also have some Meaningful Monday Lessons and Fun Fridays for team activities and bonding.
This week all 8th grade students and half of our 7th grade students have listened to our Assistant Principals, Mr. Flores and Ms. August, in Class Talks through PE classes. This is where they go through the expectations for student behavior on campus and in our community when they are visiting our neighboring businesses before or after school. They also spoke to students about our S.O.A.R motto:
Strive for success
Own our actions
Accept differences
Respect others
The 2nd half of the 7th grade will listen to this presentation in their PE class on Monday. Additionally, I had the opportunity to address all of our River Hawks through RioTV. Scroll below to see the episode. I also encourage you to check RioTV's website frequently and watch their daily episodes to see what information your student should be paying attention to each day.
Please note that because school just started this is an unusually long newsletter, and the next few might be as well, but typically I try to make these a quick read so you have what you need. Be sure to take the time to peruse the information and resources provided each week.

We hope your student has come home excited to tell you about their day! If you're not getting much out of them, instead of asking, "How was your day?" where you might get short, or even one word answers, ask them to tell you three things that happened in their day. That piece of advice, from a speaker I saw years ago, worked wonders with my own kids, and I hope it helps some of you!
May each and every one of you have a fantastic weekend and find the information in these newsletters to be helpful throughout the year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bennett
