School Councils were created to bring parents and the community together with teachers and school administrators to create a better understanding of, and mutual respect for, each other’s concerns and to share ideas for school improvement. The School Council meets 4 times a year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools is launching a new service called Parent Square to streamline communications. Activate your account on Parent Square either through the Parent Portal or the Parent Square app. Coleman MS will start using it after Labor Day.

During curriculum nights, teachers will share important information including academic standards, and their classroom schedules and procedures. To give our parents more flexibility to attend, we host digital curriculum nights. Your teachers will be sending you their links!

Morning help sessions start next Friday, 8/16. Students can be dropped off starting at 8:20 AM, as usual, in the back of the building.

Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is a unique opportunity for middle and high school students to share their feedback, school experiences, and perspectives on various issues affecting students, schools, and communities with Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts.

Through the council, students are able to voice their ideas, share suggestions for improving our schools and our district, act as thought partners as they connect with fellow students, and build their leadership capacity alongside students with whom they may not otherwise work alongside.

The application for the 2023-24 SSAC will be available in the Student Portal until August 27, 2023. Additional details about the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, including meeting dates and times, are available on our website.

Coleman Middle School updates its club offerings every year during the month of August, depending on teacher and student interest, and any other recommended clubs needed for our school programs.

Please review the information and timeline below:

1. Wednesday, 8/16: The list of clubs will be published on our website, under Students.
2. Wednesday, 8/23: A brief description of each club, as well as meeting dates and times, will be added to the website.
3. Friday, 8/25: The link for student registration will be added to the Coleman Connection (But this link will be inactive until Monday).
4. Monday, 8/28 to Friday, 9/1: The link for registration will open. -Registration is on a first come first served basis.
5. Wednesday, 9/6 to Friday, 9/8: Each teacher club sponsor will communicate directly with the parents of students accepted to a club with the exception of Robotics. More information about Robotics below.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's grade level AP.

Due to the limited space in our two Robotics Teams that participate in competitions, our Fall Robotics Club holds try outs. All students interested should sign up on 8/28- 9/1. Everyone who signs up is invited to participate in the try outs (See flyer below). No previous experience is required. Coaches will give them a task and use a rubric for selection. Students may want to sign up for another club just in case they do not make the Robotics Team.

Did not make it into the team this year? There is another opportunity to participate in Robotics. Sign up for the Spring Robotics Club next semester (after the competitions). It is open to all students and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn and practice skills for next years' auditions.

First of the Year PTA General Membership Meeting on Zoom:

Please join us at our first of the year PTA General Membership Meeting on Zoom during your student's grade level Curriculum Night Meeting. We will approve the yearly budget, post last year's audit for review, and discuss exciting upcoming events. The Zoom sessions will begin at 5:30PM at each of the following evenings: August 28th for 6th Grade, August 29th for 7th Grade, and August 30th for 8th Grade. Our custodial team earned an A+ on their first inspection of the year. Thank you Team for keeping our school beautiful and clean!

Since a number of our students walk after school, the City of Duluth wanted to share this letter with our parents. Please use this LINK to access the letter.

As an additional safety feature this year, all staff have been provided a crisis alert badge and training to make a call for immediate assistance at a school or district wide level, this last one including SROs, law enforcement, and emergency personnel.

PBIS or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports focuses on sharing, teaching, practicing, and acknowledging the behaviors we want students to display and provides interventions and supports that are consistent throughout each classroom and the school.

As part of PBIS, here at Coleman we have:

• First 20 day lessons to teach students expected behaviors.
• A table displaying expected behaviors in each classroom and the school. You can use this LINK to see our Behavior Matrix.
• Daily morning meetings and weekly advisement lessons to build classroom community.
• Behavior rewards such as weekly "Brain Breaks" and "Golden Tickets", monthly access to our PBIS store where students can redeem "paw points" they earn daily from teachers and staff, and quarterly Walk & Talks.
• A 9-step discipline process and behavior log for each student. Click this LINK to review the 9-steps.

More information will be shared during curriculum night.

This week administrators and teachers shared with all students our expectations for them to power down phones and keep them in their backpacks, as well as using any other smart devices appropriately, here at Coleman MS. We also shared that these expectations help them build community with teachers and peers, and be ready to collaborate and communicate more effectively during our Project Based Learning units, which are a fundamental part of our STEAM program.

You can use this LINK to review the expectations with your student. They have also been included in the student agenda. These expectations include also an outline of our 3-step discipline procedure when students do not meet expectations.

Please review the Dress for Excellence section in our Student and Parent Handbook. Students not following our dress for excellence recommendations will go to our grade level office where one of our office clerks will give them options in private to either change to an item of clothing in their backpack, an item of clothing from donations from our community, or from their parent delivery to the school.

• School hours are from 9:15 AM to 4:00 PM. Students are marked tardy after 9:15 AM.
• Students must be dropped off in the back at car rider lane. Doors open at 8:50 AM. Students who are late must be dropped off at the front entrance.
• Do not use the bus lanes before 9:30 AM or 4:30 PM. You can park on Main St. for drop off or pick up at these times.
• Students go directly to breakfast from car rider and bus lane. To protect learning time, students have grab-and-go lunch available after 9:10 AM.
• It is very important that you review the Coleman MS procedures for arrival and dismissal on this LINK and watch the video included for car riders.

• Make sure you visit our website, including a picture and a video of our car rider pick up procedure. Please be respectful of our procedures. They have been put in place to protect our students' safety.
  
• Write your student's name on a paper and place it on your dashboard the first few weeks.
• Student will dismiss from the gym on days of inclement weather. Please have their names displayed on your dashboard.
• Be patient until our new 6th graders learn. Build some time on your schedule because the first few days will be slower, but it gets better.
• Be courteous and respectful to our teachers and staff on duty.
• Remind your children to look for their car, and remember, everybody is trying to pick up their child and get to your next family activity!

Due to additional reimbursement funding from the Georgia Department of Education, here are some changes coming this school year:

• Free and Reduced-Price students will receive breakfast at no charge. Students with Full Pay eligibility will be charged $1.50.
• Free and Reduced-Price students will receive lunch at no charge. Students with Full Pay eligibility will pay $2.25/$2.50 for lunch.
