I challenged you yesterday during the sermon to study the parable for next week (Luke 5:33-39). Look for these 4 elements:

The Prompt - What caused Jesus to share the parable?

The Surprise - What would have shocked the original audience?

The Point - What is the main spiritual insight?

The Application - What specific action does this parable require of me? The Prompt is the easiest to locate - you will usually find it in the verses immediately preceding the parable. The Surprise isn’t always obvious - often because of historical, cultural, or language barriers (The original audience lived in a different era, a different culture, and spoke a different language than we do.) A good Study Bible or solid Commentary can be a big help for this element. The Point is sometimes clearly stated (like with our parable last week in Luke 5:32); other times you will need to reflect on the parable to discover it. It will be a spiritual truth - usually related to the Kingdom of God. The Application can only be found if you have accurately identified the Prompt, Surprise, and Point.

Give it a try this week. Study the next parable and then come on Sunday morning to check your study and see how you did!

As we take time in the coming weeks to hear from our various Ministry Teams, I encourage you to prayerfully consider which Team(s) God would have you serve on. God grants every one of His people spiritual gifts and abilities to serve Him. What has He given you to bless others with?
