Zebra Family Update
Quarter 3, 2023-2024
Happy New Year Zebras! A new year means a fresh start and an opportunity to look to the future!
FRESH START - Semester 1 is behind us, grades have been submitted, and it's time to look ahead to a new opportunity to learn and grow. Quarter 3 means that Semester 1 is behind us and Semester 2 is ahead of us, along with the opportunity for a fresh start with grades. Many teachers (check with yours) offer the opportunity to update Semester 1 grades for students who demonstrate mastery through solid grades in Semester 2. Check with your child's teacher to see if that is an option if needed!
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR ZEBRA MAXIMIZE THIS TERM:
MONITOR THEIR GRADES - You as a guardian can monitor your student's grades via Schoology 24/7. If you do not know how to access Schoology, please reach out to our office and we can be sure you have access set up (call us at 916 645 6360).
ENCOURAGE GOOD STUDY HABITS AND ATTENDING OUR HW CENTER - We encourage you to:
1. reach out to your student's teacher(s) to get input on how your student's grade can be improved (often it's as easy as turning in a missing assignment(s) or retaking a quiz)
2. encourage your student to ask their teacher how they can improve their grade using the intervention time that is built into our daily schedule
3. support your student in attending our LHS Homework Center...it is open every school day before school from 7:15-8:15am and Monday-Thursday after school for 2 hours. The HW Center is in the library and is run by students and staff who are trained and prepared to support students with lesson reteaching, completing homework, quiz retakes, test prep, and organization. You can get more information here.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE - In late January and in February, our counselors will meet with every student in grades 9-11 to check in on progress this year and to select courses for the 24/25 school year. Selecting courses is a COMMITMENT, so this is an important decision to make, and we do our very best to get students into their first choice courses and electives so that school is fun, meaningful, relevant, and choice driven for them.
Class of 2024!
Graduation - Early Details!
Graduation is scheduled for 8pm on Thursday, June 6th and each graduate will get at least 8 tickets. Additional information will be published in early March - stay tuned! In the meantime, encourage your senior to explore local scholarships (details in Schoology), to finish the year strong academically, and to keep our College & Career Center posted on their post-high school plans!
Financial Aid Workshops!
Financial Aid can be a tricky system to navigate. Come learn from experts from our counseling, college & career center, and local financial aid advocates so you don't miss any steps along the way. Three workshops are coming up in January and February to support you and your graduate - whether you are looking at trade school, community college, or a 4 year college or university, these workshops are for every senior and their families!
Winter Homecoming!
Each winter, we celebrate our winter sports with a winter homecoming celebration - there will be a spirit week, rally, and a dance! Winter HoCo is the week of 1/29-2/3, with our rally on 1/31 and our dance on 2/3. Dance guest passes are available in the office NOW and tickets will go on sale soon!

Getting Connected and Making Memories!
Research shows that getting involved is a top way to ensure connection and progress towards graduation. LHS offers dozens of student athletic, academic, arts, and activity based opportunities to help your student find their people and their passion.
For more information about LHS clubs, visit this website.
For more information about LHS athletics, check out this website.
Our Spring athletic season is coming up quickly - spring sports include: Boys and Girls Swimming, Boys & Girls Lacrosse (Girls is NEW this year!), Stunt, Boys Volleyball, Track & Field, Baseball, Softball, Boys Golf, Boys Tennis, and Co-Ed Trap (club sport).
Academic Support @ LHS HW Center
LHS offers an incredible tutoring program that is designed to help students get their homework done, get organized, to ask questions, to get reteaching, and even to take care of test retakes (for some teachers!). We are prepared to offer support in all content areas taught at LHS. Tutoring will start on Wednesday, 9/6.
Where:
- In Person at LHS Library or online using Google Meet - code: LHStutoring
When:
- M-F from 7:15-8:15am
- M from 2:30-4:30pm
- T-Th from 3:30-5:30pm
Keep in mind, that the library hosts our tutoring program to support students with learning. The library is not open for hanging out during tutoring times - all students must be actively involved in some type of academic activity during the tutoring program hours if they are in the library.

Counseling - Focus on Seniors and Underclass Students!
Our counseling team is also turning their attention towards the 24/25 year by meeting with all students in grades 8-11 in group settings and individually to review their progress and help them select classes for the upcoming year! Be watching for information coming home via ParentSquare so you can review your Zebra's options with them. Students in grades 9-11 will also get a print out of their transcript to help guide their choices for the 24/25 year. Students and Families can make an appointment with their counselor online via lhs.wpusd.org > Academics > Counseling > Meet the Counseling Team, or click here.
Freshman Focus
We are VERY focused on supporting our freshmen this year. One of our counselors has already been in freshman classes to teach them about graduation requirements, earning credits and A-G requirements. In addition, we have begun a Freshmen Intervention Team (FIT) that includes many of our freshman teachers and support staff. The focus of this team is to identify struggling students and intervene to support them. Our first intervention includes a full day of Parent/Teacher conferences for students who appear to be struggling academically. Additional interventions are on the horizon and we build in our supports. We are excited to see the impact of this focus! Stay tuned for more information.
College & Career Update
As we begin 2024, we have some exciting and some new events planned.
We are having our first Career Path Choices Night. If you want to know more about the choices available after high school, what is FAFSA or WWE and other college and career options, join us on February 8th from 6-8pm. There will be short breakout sessions with information for you to attend. Child Care and refreshments will be provided. This event is open to all students and parents.
Seniors have applied to colleges, the military or trade schools. Now they are completing the next steps with scholarship applications and FAFSA applications. All local Scholarships are accessible through Schoology. In the LHS College and Career Group, through Resources, then Class of 2024, Scholarships folder. We will also have a Scholarship workshop sometime in February. FAFSA Application workshop dates are January 23rd and February 13th from 6-8pm at Lincoln High School and February 12th at Twelve Bridges High School. Senior students are encouraged to attend along with the person who will be their contributor on the application. It is required that all Seniors fill out a FAFSA. It is important to create an FSA ID before you attend these workshops. Please look out for more information on Schoology. Prizes and Snacks will be provided. Remember to also check CalKids to see if you already have some money for college or career training. Our LHS website, College and Career, has more information about CalKids.
If your Senior has already accepted where they will be attending, please let Mrs.Vadgama know so we can recognize them.
This year our Career Fair is on the morning of March 14th, during school. All grade levels are invited to attend and explore the possibilities. If you work for a company or own a business that you would like to share as a career with the students, please contact Mrs. Vadgama.
Wellness Center
The Wellness Center is open and ready to support students. As a reminder to families, if your student is struggling with their mental health and needs a safe place to land during the day, we are here to help. Students seeking wellness support simply ask their teachers for a wellness center break in room 14 where they will be greeted and offered space to talk or take a break for 10-15 minutes.
*NEW* Virtual Calming Room
We are thrilled to be able to bring the community our first iteration of the virtual calming room. This is a free and discreet website that we have curated for students who struggle with finding and identifying coping skills. We know that not all students will show up to the wellness center for support, and that's okay. Our goal is to remove as many barriers as we can to student wellness and success. We hope to continue to tweak and improve the resources on this page as the year goes on.
The Foundry
The LHS/PHS Foundry is located in Portable 65 (one of the portables on the north side of the LHS parking lot. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school for now. Be watching for expanded hours!
For more information about the Foundry, reach out to site director, Emilee at Emilee@foundrylincoln.org.
