Principal's Greeting
This week we will be administering SC Ready and SC Pass. Our teachers have spent the year preparing our students for these state exams, and we know everyone is ready. Before Monday, we want to remind our students and families of a few things:
- Remember to charge your Chromebook each night before testing. This is really important as all students will be taking their tests on their assigned Chromebook. We want to make sure everyone is prepared for success with a fully charged device.
- Get a good night sleep before each test. If you are tired, you won't be able to focus as well and therefore won't be able to perform at your best.
- Eat a good breakfast. Having a fully stomach will fuel your brain. Set yourself up for success by eating a good healthy breakfast, either at home or at school.
- Once a student starts the test, they must finish it. Please do not plan to sign students out early for appointments on test days.
- Make sure to arrive at school on time. Students may not be able to test on the scheduled day if they are tardy.
- Watch the video below for a message from me.
State Testing Prohibited Electronics
Students are not allowed to have electronic devices that can be used for communication, recording, timing, creating images, or storing images. Student possession of devices such as, but not limited to, tablets, smart phones, cell phones, mp3 players, e-readers, smart watches, smart glasses, or any other electronic imaging or photographic devices during testing is not allowed. Students will be required to turn in any electronic devices to their testing administrator prior to testing. Turned in electronic devices will be given back to the student once the testing session has ended.
You all are going to do great!
Ms. Rowehl

Young Adult Books in the Media Center
Our middle school library serves students with a wide range of academic and recreational reading needs. There is a significant difference in the maturity and interests of students between grades six and eight. All of our school library books are carefully vetted, and we rely on our district library materials selection guidelines and professional library review sources to provide relevant books for all our students.
Some of our books have YA (young adult) labels on the spines to indicate books that have content and themes that might have greater appeal or relevance to more mature readers. These books often feature older characters, and they may contain language or references to mental health, drugs, alcohol, violence, sexual situations, complex choices, or similar.
We want to make sure all students have access to the books they need and are interested in as well as books that are the right fit for your family. If you would prefer your child not check out any materials considered YA, please complete the form linked below and discuss this decision with your child. A note will be added to your child’s library account about this preference. If you’d like to make a change, this preference can be updated at any time throughout the school year by emailing our librarian at betty_bouton@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Thank you for your support of your student’s reading and learning!

Student Listening Circles
We will be conducting a voluntary student Listening Circle at Camp Road Middle School on May 18th. Students will be randomly selected from all grade levels to participate in the circle. If your son/daughter is selected, you will be notified prior to May 18th. Their participation is voluntary. The questions being asked in the circle are to gain feedback from our students as we close out this year and begin planning for next year.
- Share your name and one highlight for you this school year.
- What has been the most difficult part of this school year for you?
- Raise your hand if when you need help or support, you have an adult that you feel comfortable talking to at school. [Is there anyone that would like to share more about their support person?]
- Think about what coping skills you have been using during the last year.
- Share any ideas for how your school can better support you and your classmates as we finish this school year.
- What changes/adjustments would like to see at Camp Road for next school year?

Mental Health Minute
May is Mental Health Month, and we will be featuring information on Healthy Home Environments from Mental Health America. The following is taken from the MHA Mental Health Month 2023 Toolkit.
MAKE YOUR BEDROOM SLEEP-FRIENDLY
For good mental health, it’s particularly important to pay attention to your sleeping conditions. Poor sleep is known to sometimes trigger or worsen mental health challenges, while getting quality rest can protect your mental health. Your surroundings come into play with things like temperature, light, and noise.
WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE MY SLEEP?
Keep it cool. The ideal sleeping temperature is 60-67°F. Keep a fan around for warm nights, and blankets nearby for cold nights.
Lessen excess noise. If you live with others or in a busy area, distracting sounds like traffic or neighbors might keep you up at night. You can use a noise machine, or find sleep music or white noise online to drown out annoying sounds. If no sound at all is what you need for a restful night’s sleep, you could try using earplugs.
Make your space dark. Try to limit the amount of light in your space, including electronics such as your phone or television, which create blue light that can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythms.
Use blinds or blackout curtains to keep outside light from getting in – especially if you work nightshift and need to sleep during the day.

School Technology Information You Need to Know...
Students should NOT bring their Chromebook chargers to school. Please charge devices at home each evening. Chargers tend to disappear at school, and we have no way to track them. Students will be responsible for the cost of replacing lost chargers, so please don’t let your student bring the charger to school!
A reminder about the CCSD fee structure for damages and loss of chromebooks:
- Negligent/Accidental Breakage - No charge for first incident per school year $50 per incident for each subsequent event
- Intentional Vandalism - $300.
- Stolen Device - No cost if a police report is provided
- Lost Device - $300
- Lost Charger - $40
